Tradition meets a contemporary vision\, and the memory of those who danced before flows through every movement. Dance appears as a place of passage: the past breathes in the present\, what is inherited transforms\, the body holds experience\, and each gesture finds its place in the now. \nTonight celebrates the journey\, the legacy\, and the love for those who danced before. This evening exists because others came before it\, but this one is different. It is mine and it is now.” – Marta Gálvez \nFeatured artists for La Velada include David Durán (flamenco guitarist)\, Rosa Linero (flamenco singer)\, Luis Dorado (flamenco percussionist). The artistic team includes Marta Gálvez (director\, choreographer and flamenco dancer) and Begoña Fernandez (artistic direction and dramaturgy). \nPhotography: José A. Fernández de Córdoba\nThis event is sponsored in part by Former Honorary Consul in Seattle o Luis F Esteban \n\n\n\n\n\nSPAIN FLAMENCO ARTS organizes performances\, workshops\, and cultural activities\, showcasing a wide range of artists from various styles. Through these initiatives\, it has toured embassies\, Cervantes Institutes\, cooperation offices\, international universities\, theaters\, festivals\, and other private venues around the world. \nABOUT MARTA GÁLVEZ\nBorn in Córdoba\, Marta Gálvez began her journey in flamenco at the age of three. Her passion for dance led her to train at the Conservatorio Profesional de Danza\, where she earned her degree in Spanish Dance in 2012. She also received a scholarship at the Centro Andaluz de Danza\, where she deepened her knowledge and honed her technique under the guidance of renowned professionals.  Throughout her training\, she explored various styles and techniques that enriched her artistic expression\, blending the intensity of flamenco with the elegance of Spanish dance. Her constant pursuit of learning and refinement has shaped her into a performer with a distinctive style and commanding stage presence. \nMarta Gálvez has built her career by participating in competitions and earning distinctions such as the “Outstanding Dancer” award in 2015 and the Young Flamenco Artists Award from the Córdoba Provincial Council in 2023. Her talent and versatility have led her to join companies led by David Coria\, María Pagés\, Ursula López\, José Porcel\, and Juan Carlos Avecilla\, performing at international festivals and theaters. Building upon Field Hall’s mission to be a home for arts and events that bring people together and strengthen community\, the AIR program shifts the organization beyond traditional presenting into a model of artistic creation and production. Artists are invited to the North Olympic Peninsula for extended residencies to develop new work while engaging deeply with local residents through workshops\, masterclasses\, lectures\, open rehearsals\, school visits\, and public performances. \nThrough partnerships with schools\, libraries\, senior centers\, cultural organizations\, and regional arts institutions\, the program creates meaningful opportunities for community members to participate in the creative process itself\, fostering lifelong learning and strengthening the cultural vitality of the region. \nJessie Montgomery will use her residency to advance the creative development of a new opera project intended for future production in partnership with the Metropolitan Opera. The residency will provide dedicated time for musical exploration\, collaboration\, and public engagement around the process of creating large-scale contemporary opera. \nABOUT NATHAN RØDAHL \nThree-time GRAMMY nominated Music Educator Nathan Rødahl has served as Director of Orchestras at Port Angeles High School for nearly a decade. He leads the program’s long-standing quadrennial tours to New York City and has expanded opportunities for North Olympic string players through international performance tours to Central Europe. \nNationally active in music education\, Rødahl served two terms as Northwest Chair on NAfME’s National Orchestra Council\, served as a Teacher Leader with the federally funded Connected Arts Networks (CAN)\, and is a nationally recognized presenter on emergent research and string pedagogy.  Locally\, he serves on the staff of the Wintergrass Festival Orchestra and cofounded the weekly Port Angeles Community String Jam. \nABOUT JESSIE MONTGOMERY \nJessie Montgomery is a GRAMMY® Award-winning composer\, violinist\, and educator whose work interweaves classical music with elements of vernacular music\, improvisation\, poetry\, and social consciousness\, establishing her as an acute interpreter of 21st-century American sound and experience. SUMMARY:Songwriter's Evening - The Roots Project with Martha Redbone & Aaron Whitby
DESCRIPTION:Field Hall Presents: Songwriter’s Evening – The Roots Project with Martha Redbone & Aaron Whitby\nThursday\, September 24 @ 7PM | Sunset Lounge\n*Tickets $44.50 General Admission\, $220 VIP table for 4 | CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS\nFinancial assistance available – click here to apply \n*Our ticketing platform Ludus charges a 5% service fee for all card transactions. To avoid this fee\, visit our Box Office at 201 W. Front Street and pay via cash or check. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM. \nLed by the extraordinary Martha Redbone and longtime collaborator Aaron Whitby\, The Roots Project is an experience that is more than a concert: a journey through American music\, storytelling\, and shared cultural memory. Hailed as “a brilliant collision of cultures\,” the ensemble weaves together folk\, blues\, gospel\, and soul with Indigenous musical traditions to create a sound that is at once timeless and urgently contemporary. \nIn this stripped-down songwriter format\, the evening unfolds with an intimate\, conversational energy. Redbone’s powerhouse vocals—shaped by her Afro-Indigenous heritage and Appalachian upbringing—blend with Whitby’s expressive piano and musical direction\, creating a rich sonic landscape that moves effortlessly between genres and emotional registers. Through story and song\, they share reflections on identity\, resilience\, and the human spirit\, inviting audiences not just to listen\, but to connect. \nExpect a performance that feels both deeply rooted and spontaneously alive: songs that draw from ancestral traditions and contemporary influences\, interwoven with humor\, history\, and heartfelt storytelling. Past performances by the Roots Project are known for their communal spirit—often blurring the line between stage and audience through call-and-response\, storytelling\, and a shared sense of purpose. \nSet against the sweeping waterfront views of the Sunset Lounge\, an intimate gathering space known for its warm ambiance\, craft cocktails\, and relaxed pre-show atmosphere\, this Songwriter’s Evening invites audiences into a deeply personal\, soul-stirring musical experience. \nWhether you’re discovering Martha Redbone for the first time or returning to her work\, this evening offers a rare opportunity to experience one of America’s most vital voices in an up-close\, immersive setting—where every note\, every story\, and every moment resonates. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nABOUT MARTHA REDBONE\nMartha Redbone is a vocalist\, songwriter\, composer and 2021 United States Artist fellow and multi award-winning musician\, she is celebrated for her tasty gumbo of roots music embodying the folk and mountain blues sounds of her childhood in the Appalachian hills of Black Mountain\, Kentucky\, infused with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn. Inheriting her powerful gospel-singing father’s voice and the resilient spirit of her mother’s Southeastern culture and heritage\, Redbone broadens the boundaries of American Roots music with songs and storytelling that give voice to issues of social justice\, connecting cultures and celebrating the human spirit. Martha works in partnership with longtime collaborator/husband Aaron Whitby. \nHer album The Garden of Love: Songs of William Blake (produced by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder and Grammy-winner John McEuen)\, is “a brilliant collision of cultures” (New Yorker). Redbone and Whitby are the composers\, arrangers and orchestrators of original music and score for the 2022 Broadway revival of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuff\, the 1976 classic choreopoem by the late Ntozake Shange\, which garnered seven Tony Award nominations and critical acclaim. Redbone and Whitby are the 2020 Drama Desk Award recipients for Outstanding Music in a Play and the 2020 Audelco Award recipient for Outstanding Composer of Original Music and Score for the Off-Broadway revival.\nABOUT AARON WHITBY\nAaron Whitby is an award-winning pianist\, songwriter\, composer\, record producer\, and engineer known for his work with an array of noteworthy artists\, including George Clinton\, Natalie Cole\, Randy Brecker. Born and bred in London\, England\, Whitby is best known for his work with his longtime collaborator and wife\, Martha Redbone. Whitby is the brainchild behind Cousin from Another Planet- a Jazz and Visual exploration project\, receiving critical acclaim and accolades from music journalist and critic Greg Tate as “Percolating\, stimulating and motor- booty activatin’…”. Additional works from the Redbone/Whitby composer team include “Revelation” by Flannery O’Connor directed by Karin Coonrod (2022)\, “HUMAN” an exploration in puppetry directed by Nehprii Amenii (2024)\, song contribution for “Primer for a Failed Superpower” directed by Rachel Chavkin (2019); “Flood in the Valley”\, a Chinese -American musical collaboration directed by Michael Liebenluft (2018)\, “Stars” – Privacy in the Digital Age in 5-Minute Plays (2018)\, commissioned by the New York Theater Workshop and Goethe Institute\, and many more. The team are currently in development with Black Mountain Women\, a new musical directed by Les Waters\, book by Naomi Iizuka\, commissioned by the Public Theater\, NY. At this time Ian Maksin sings in Ukrainian\, Polish\, Russian\, English\, Farsi\, Armenian\, French\, Italian\, Arabic\, Hebrew\, Mongolian\, Bambara (one of the tongues spoken in West Africa) and many other exotic languages. Most of this repertoire was amassed by Maksin during his world travels\, jam sessions and collaborations with local musicians. He began playing guitar and piano at age 3 and cello at age 6 at the School for Gifted Children in Leningrad and then came to the USA at 16 to continue studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. After working for many years in the classical genre including a three-year tenure with the New World Symphony in Miami Ian has decided to look for his own musical path. His diverse musical experience\, including playing rock and blues guitar and passion for jazz and world music has allowed him to take the cello to a new dimension and develop his own distinct style as a musician and composer. \nIn Ian’s own words: “At some point I realized that music is much more than mere entertainment. Music is one of most powerful and unifying forces in the world\, capable of healing\, inspiring\, bringing people together and bringing peace among them. I believe that cello will save the world”  \n\n\n\n\n\nOur mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Financial assistance is available for this event through our #fieldhallforall program. It is telling that the Chinese Acrobatic tradition just gets stronger\, due to the  continued innovation of the artists and the endless enthusiasm from their adoring public. \nEach artist in THE PEKING ACROBATS displays a range of demanding performances\, most of them typifying the Chinese Circus\, offering a refreshing alternative to the usual Western traditions of performance. From the dangerous climbing chair stack high above the audience\, about which the New York Times said\, “these acrobats provide feats of circus art that reach breathtaking heights of skill\,” to the gravity defying contortionists and tumblers\, to the spectacular Bicycle Pagoda where multiple performers ride atop a single performer on the bicycle – all this and more completes a marvelous and exciting entertainment event for theatre going “youngsters” from nine to ninety-two…as Variety once raved\, “A is for Acrobat…and astounding…and AMAZING!” \nThey have performed many trail-blazing Symphony Concerts\, combining their unique art form with the traditional Symphony Orchestra in their inspiring performances that have been hailed by the press as “theatrical alchemy at its finest!” Some of these world-famous Symphony Orchestras include the San Francisco Symphony\, the Atlanta Symphony\, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra\, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra\, the Buffalo Philharmonic\, the San Diego Symphony\, and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. THE PEKING ACROBATS have built a tremendous reputation while performing not only on the cultural stage\, but also on many popular television shows\, including NICKELODEON’S UNFABULOUS\, and ELLEN’S REALLY BIG SHOW\, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres\, among several others.

SUMMARY:Hung Dance: Birdy

Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM. \n“In ‘BIRDY\,’ the Taiwanese choreographer LAI Hung-chung explores the limits of our desires and our sense of freedom.” – Jade Enaud\, Zone Critique \n“BIRDY\,” a captivating dance piece by LAI Hung-chung\, explores the interplay of freedom and limitations within Taiwan’s communities. LAI delves into the subtle influences of emotions and historical echoes on social harmony through a blend of societal dynamics and personal narratives. \nUsing a cage and dreamer metaphor\, LAI bridges personal struggles with broader societal contexts. The deconstruction of traditional Chinese opera props\, like the spear transformed into a cage-like “Rattan pole\,” symbolizes life’s constraints. \nIncorporating the “Ling Zi” pheasant feathers\, traditionally signifying warrior might\, LAI reinterprets their meaning to empower individuals to redefine their consciousness. This exploration of freedom and self-awareness is visually depicted through the imagery of the “Ling Zi\,” subtly suggesting life’s delicate balance between limitations and aspirations. \nSet to an eclectic mix of electronic and Chinese classical music\, “BIRDY” reinterprets percussion and seamlessly blends Tai-chi with contemporary dance. It portrays the journey from tradition to modernity and conveys a powerful message that in this era\, we can redefine class\, freedom\, and limitations while seeking balance and identity. \nEVENT HIGHLIGHT:Join us in The Sunset Lounge for a special Pre-Show Conversation with Hung Dance Artistic Director Lai Hung-Chung and Field Hall’s Director of Education and Artistic Engagement\, Jessie Young. \nTogether\, they’ll dive into the themes\, imagery\, and creative process behind Hung Dance’s internationally celebrated work Birdy—offering a rare glimpse into the company’s distinctive movement language and artistic vision before the evening’s performance. \nDate: Wednesday\, November 12\nTime: 6–7 PM (before the 7:30 PM performance)\nLength of Program: 1 hour\nABOUT HUNG DANCE\nHUNG DANCE is a Taiwanese contemporary dance company founded in 2017 by artistic director and choreographer LAI Hung-chung.
