This is a Sunset Lounge event with bar service throughout the evening. \nField Arts & Events Hall welcomes you to share your talent on our Sunset Lounge stage! Join us for Open Mic Mondays in the Sunset Lounge\, hosted by Bread & Gravy Duo. Signup for open mic begins at 6PM; open mic starts at 6:15PM. This is a free\, all-ages event – no RSVP or ticket required. \n*VIP tables are for our very inspired patrons who choose to donate $40 to reserve seating at a premium table for up to four guests. Donations like these\, cash donations at Field Hall\, and purchases of food and drinks through the bar support this ongoing free series at Field Hall. We thank you for all levels of support – including thunderous applause for our local artists! \nABOUT BREAD & GRAVY\nBread & Gravy Duo is a popular husband and wife act (Stephanie and Jess Doenges) who perform songs across many styles and genres. They feature powerful female vocals\, eclectic piano\, rhythm guitar\, and the occasional flute and harmonica. They have hosted or cohosted many Open Mics on the peninsula\, including ‘Open Mic at the Buzz’\, ‘The Junction Open Jam’\, ‘The Rainshadow Open Mic’\, and most recently at ‘Open Mic at the Sit-N-Bull’. They often play as a bigger band\, adding steady stalwarts such as Jerry Gilleland (drums) and Jason Taylor (bass and harmonies) and have also collaborated with dozens of other local musicians\, so one never knows who will come sit in with them on a given night. Follow @breadandgravymusic for more. \nSTEPHANIE DOENGES (SOUND)\nStephanie is one of the most established and recognized musicians on the peninsula. She has been playing music since a young age\, and has been in local bands such as Restless\, Luck of the Draw\, Rolling Waters\, and the Cornstalks. For the past twelve years\, she has been the face and voice of Bread and Gravy in all of its formations. While her voice is a main draw\, and guitar is her most common instrument\, she often surprises and astounds with riveting flute and harmonica solos.\nStephanie has run sound for Open Mics for many years now\, and she’s grown very adept at dialing people in quickly\, as well as tailoring the sound to any nuance the performer displays. \nJESS DOENGES (MC)\nJess is the quintessential late bloomer\, who didn’t touch a musical instrument until age 29. Bread & Gravy is the first and only band he’s ever been in. In juxtaposition to the versatile Stephanie\, he’s a one trick pony on the piano. But his love for piano\, and his love for Stephanie shows through in his playing\, and he has truly played himself into one of the top accompanists around. As an MC\, he has tons of experience herding cats (err.. musicians) to make the Open Mic experience enjoyable and fair for all involved. His quick wit and inviting vibe tend to make the audience comfortable and relaxed\, which is what is needed to have a supportive environment for all performers.

The production revisits Mexican folklore to tell new stories\, engage old archetypes\, challenge patriarchy\, uplift the role of curanderas and re-examine our imagination about “death” and the “after-life.” \nEmbrace the power of storytelling as a form of processing grief and sharing love with those in the beyond. Their electric sound & energy has taken them around the world playing shows from Bonnaroo to the Hollywood Bowl\, WOMAD New Zealand to Montreal Jazz\, & beyond! \nBorn and raised East of the Los Angeles River\, Las Cafeteras are remixing roots music as modern day troubadours.  They are a sonic explosion of Afro-Mexican rhythms\, electronic beats and powerful rhymes that document stories of a community seeking to ‘build a world where many world fit.’ \nFrom Afro-Mexican to Americana\, from Soul to Son Jarocho\, from Roots to Rock and Hip Hop\, Las Cafeteras take folk music to the future. \nLas Cafeteras honor the past by using electrifying traditional instrumentation like the 8 string Jarana\, 4 string Requinto\, Quijada (donkey jawbone) and Tarima (a wooden platform). Las Cafeteras sing in 5 distinct languages\, English\, Spanish\, Spanglish\, Love and Justice … and they believe everyone understands at least one of those languages. \nThey’ve performed in the good company of Mexican icons Café Tacuba\, Natalia LaFourcade\, Lila Downs\, Gypsy Kings\, Colombian superstar Juanes\, Hip Hop artist Common\, Los Angeles legends Ozomatli and Los Lobos\, performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra\, and many more. \nOur mission is to make art accessible to everyone. SUMMARY:Hung Dance: Birdy
DESCRIPTION:Field Hall Presents: Hung Dance\, Birdy\nWednesday\, November 12 @ 7:30PM | Donna M. Morris Theater\n*Tickets $25-$65 Adult\, $20 Youth | Financial assistance available – click here to apply\n*Our ticketing platform Ludus charges a 5% service fee for all credit card transactions. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM. \n“In ‘BIRDY\,’ the Taiwanese choreographer LAI Hung-chung explores the limits of our desires and our sense of freedom.” – Jade Enaud\, Zone Critique \n“BIRDY\,” a captivating dance piece by LAI Hung-chung\, explores the interplay of freedom and limitations within Taiwan’s communities. LAI delves into the subtle influences of emotions and historical echoes on social harmony through a blend of societal dynamics and personal narratives. \nUsing a cage and dreamer metaphor\, LAI bridges personal struggles with broader societal contexts. The deconstruction of traditional Chinese opera props\, like the spear transformed into a cage-like “Rattan pole\,” symbolizes life’s constraints. \nIncorporating the “Ling Zi” pheasant feathers\, traditionally signifying warrior might\, LAI reinterprets their meaning to empower individuals to redefine their consciousness. This exploration of freedom and self-awareness is visually depicted through the imagery of the “Ling Zi\,” subtly suggesting life’s delicate balance between limitations and aspirations. \nSet to an eclectic mix of electronic and Chinese classical music\, “BIRDY” reinterprets percussion and seamlessly blends Tai-chi with contemporary dance. It portrays the journey from tradition to modernity and conveys a powerful message that in this era\, we can redefine class\, freedom\, and limitations while seeking balance and identity. \nEVENT HIGHLIGHT:Join us in The Sunset Lounge for a special Pre-Show Conversation with Hung Dance Artistic Director Lai Hung-Chung and Field Hall’s Director of Education and Artistic Engagement\, Jessie Young. \nTogether\, they’ll dive into the themes\, imagery\, and creative process behind Hung Dance’s internationally celebrated work Birdy—offering a rare glimpse into the company’s distinctive movement language and artistic vision before the evening’s performance. \nDate: Wednesday\, November 12\nTime: 6–7 PM (before the 7:30 PM performance)\nLength of Program: 1 hour\nABOUT HUNG DANCE\nHUNG DANCE is a Taiwanese contemporary dance company founded in 2017 by artistic director and choreographer LAI Hung-chung.
