SUMMARY:The Things Around Us
DESCRIPTION:Field Hall Presents: The Things Around Us\nComposed\, Written\, and Performed by Ahamefule J. Oluo\nThursday\, October 16 @ 7PM | Donna M. Morris Theater\n*Tickets $25-$50 Adult\, $18 Youth | Financial assistance available – click here to apply\n*Our ticketing platform Ludus charges a 5% service fee for all credit card transactions. To avoid this fee\, visit our Box Office at 201 W. Front Street and pay via cash or check. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM. \n“As both a speaker and a musician\, Ahamefule J. Oluo specializes in mellow anxiety. It’s a smooth but layered style that makes them highly agreeable to listen to and at the same time unexpectedly moving. The concentrated emotional force lurking in their ease of manner sneaks up on you.” – The New York Times \nThe Things Around Us is a dazzling new work from acclaimed multi-disciplinary artist\, Ahamefule J. Oluo\, that layers live music and narrative exploration to create an introspective evening about the things that connect us all. It is the third in a trilogy of shows from Oluo\, following NOW I’M FINE and SUSAN. \nIn the show\, Oluo uses looping technology\, trumpet\, clarinet\, vocals\, cardboard shipping boxes for percussion\, and other instruments to create an expansive symphony performed live by one person. Weaving narrative layers throughout\, Oluo shares deeply personal reflections and darkly humorous accounts of strangers\, acquaintances\, and friends that conjoin with the music to create a singular\, transcendent experience. The Things Around Us is an evening that will draw you in and remind you of the beauty in life. \nIn The Things Around Us\, Oluo continues their practice of layering live music and narrative\, but departs from their previously epic ensemble work and highly personal stories to create\, instead\, an intimate solo show about other people. \nCombining experimental jazz\, new music\, Nigerian hi-life\, and electronic looping with bizarre and darkly humorous accounts of strangers and acquaintances\, Oluo draws out larger social and political meanings from those encounters\, weaving together a tapestry of characters and existential inquiries with dynamic multi-instrumental compositions\, using trumpet\, clarinet\, vocals\, looping/effects pedals\, and cardboard shipping boxes for percussion. \nThe Things Around Us began as a 15-minute video piece produced during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020\, supported by a Mellon Creative Research Fellowship with University of Washington’s Meany Center. It has been further developed through early-stage showings at Black-centered cultural spaces LANGSTON and Wa Na Wari in Seattle\, residencies at MacDowell\, Yaddo\, and Seattle Rep. \nThe Things Around Us was supported by a commissioning grant from The Map Fund. \nOur mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Financial assistance is available for this event through our #fieldhallforall program. Patrons can request a discount of up to 100%. Click here to apply for financial assistance.

SUMMARY:TAE & The Neighborly
DESCRIPTION:Field Hall Presents: TAE & The Neighborly\nWednesday\, September 24 @ 7PM | Sunset Lounge Dance Party\n*Tickets $20\, General Admission | Financial assistance available – click here to apply\n*Our ticketing platform Ludus charges a 5% service fee for all credit card transactions. To avoid this fee\, visit our Box Office at 201 W. Front Street and pay via cash or check. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM. \nCelebrate the start of fall with one final summer-style dance party and happy hour in the Sunset Lounge! This general admission event will offer a dance floor with plenty of room to boogie\, and Happy Hour specials from 5PM – 6:30PM before the music starts. \nTAE & The Neighborly\, a Wisconsin based Soul-pop R&B group\, found themselves playing music together in a very unconventional way. \nThey were all neighbors\, each one living alone on one floor of a five-story flat. Cake baking is a shared passion of the five member group\, but in the sugar shortages early in the 2020 pandemic\, they found themselves so continually knocking on each other’s doors asking for a single cup of sugar that a group decision was made to all move in together and share cake-baking resources. And since everyone knows all good rhythms begin in the kitchen\, it wasn’t before long that the group began to write and perform together  across the nation. \nCritics hail the group as “having more kick than a bagged-up mule” (Rotary Times)  and their live show “…going down smoother than a can of [beans] warmed on the campfire” (Cowboy Gazette). All in all\, if you are looking for a dense show that will give you more inspiration fuel for self lovin’\, world changin’\, and consideration havin’ meet them where the music is made to be shared. \nOur mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM. \nBREAKING BOUNDARIES both musical and geographical\, cellist\, composer and multilingual vocalist IAN MAKSIN has created his own unique style by blending elements of different genres and traditional music from around the globe in a new way using his cello as the main unifying force. \nONE-MAN ORCHESTRA: In addition to cello\, he used an electronic device called the loop pedal\, which allows him to create “loops” or layers by recording and replaying his own playing in real time. \nSINGING IN 30 LANGUAGES: What began as a hobby and a passion for linguistics and travel has become part of a unique concert experience. At this time Ian Maksin sings in Ukrainian\, Polish\, Russian\, English\, Farsi\, Armenian\, French\, Italian\, Arabic\, Hebrew\, Mongolian\, Bambara (one of the tongues spoken in West Africa) and many other exotic languages. Most of this repertoire was amassed by Maksin during his world travels\, jam sessions and collaborations with local musicians. Many of his original songs and instrumental compositions are also infused with flavors of ethnic music from countries and regions where he drew inspiration from: Mongolia\, West Africa\, Middle East\, the Balkans\, Andalusian flamenco. \nTHE GLOBAL MUSICIAN: Ian Maksin was born in Leningrad\, former USSR\, into a multinational family and grew up absorbing many cultures and traditions from an early age. He began playing guitar and piano at age 3 and cello at age 6 at the School for Gifted Children in Leningrad and then came to the USA at 16 to continue studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. After working for many years in the classical genre including a three-year tenure with the New World Symphony in Miami Ian has decided to look for his own musical path. His diverse musical experience\, including playing rock and blues guitar and passion for jazz and world music has allowed him to take the cello to a new dimension and develop his own distinct style as a musician and composer. \nIn Ian’s own words: “At some point I realized that music is much more than mere entertainment. Music is one of most powerful and unifying forces in the world\, capable of healing\, inspiring\, bringing people together and bringing peace among them. I believe that cello will save the world”  \n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:An Evening with Cowboy Junkies: Celebrating 40 Years
DESCRIPTION:Field Hall Presents: An Evening with Cowboy Junkies – Celebrating 40 Years\nJune 26 @ 7PM | Donna M. Morris Theater\nField Hall opens at 5:00PM\nTickets $50-$80 CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS \nCowboy Junkies will be performing a career-spanning show from The Trinity Session to their recent album\, Such Ferocious Beauty! \n \nABOUT COWBOY JUNKIES\nSometimes revolutions begin quietly. \nIn 1988\, Cowboy Junkies proved that there was an audience waiting for something quiet\, beautiful and reflective. The Trinity Session was like a whisper that cut through the noise — and it was compelling. It stood out in the midst of the flash and bombast that came to define the late 80’s. The now classic recording combined folk\, blues and rock in a way that had never been heard before and went on to sell more than a million copies. \nFormed in Toronto in 1985 with siblings Michael Timmins on guitar\, Margo Timmins on vocals\, Peter Timmins on drums\, and Michael’s lifelong friend Alan Anton on bass\, the band has sparkled over the course of 29 albums. “I’ve known Alan longer than I’ve known Pete\,” says Michael. “We were friends before Pete was born.” \nUnlike most long-lasting groups\, Cowboy Junkies have never had a break up or taken a sanity-saving hiatus. There’s an appreciation of each other that keeps them constantly working. “It’s that intimacy and understanding of what each one of us brings to the table\,” says Michael. Cowboy Junkies’ will be performing a career-spanning show\, including their new album\, ‘Such Ferocious Beauty’\, which was released worldwide on June 2\, 2023 to universal critical acclaim.

From Australia to Disney World to the National Cathedral in D.C\, he splattered the world with his beautiful and soulful voice.  These days\, he sings on his farm\, in his barn\, on the river\, with friends around campfires\, and habitually hosts gatherings with many of the most talented and unique people on this planet.  His infectious spirit and genuine interest in lifting up those around him make him a person to know fondly. \nJesse Ahmann:  cellist/random 13th century human:   As a classically trained cellist\, and having been surrounded by music all his life\, Jesse has always dreamt of being a composer. He has since learned multiple instruments and frequently uses them in his compositions\, realizing that dream\, working as a film composer\, meditative music writer\, and successful YouTube musician. He loves to convey emotion\, both in the undercurrents of his music and the melodies. He has performed as principal cellist for numerous symphonies across the Northwest\, and also performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center; additionally\, he was a featured artist on National Public Radio’s (NPR’s) “All Things Considered.” His musical credits include performances throughout Europe\, Asia\, Central\, and South America.   Locally\, he performs with musical groups such as ‘The Ahmann Brothers’ and ‘Topia Vana’.   Jesse has also started playing standup bass with Bread & Gravy\, and he’s already nearly as accomplished with it\, as he is with the cello.  He has played in exotic places\, such as Quilcene and Chimacum\, in front of tens\, if not dozens\, of people. \nIsabelle Rose:  keyboards/space person:  From a galaxy far far away in Los Angeles California. She is a classically trained vocalist and attended Berkley College of Music in Boston\, MA and Western Washington University in Bellingham\, WA as a music major. She plays several different instruments\, has her own band (Olympic Generations)\, and they have been together for over 15 years. Her musical influences are mostly classic country artists such as Glen Cambell\, The Judds\, and The Sons of the Pioneers. She also enjoys some of the tight harmonies from Motown and blue grass. While in high school and college\, she has participated in musical theater and in multiple community choruses\, singing different parts depending on the need: soprano\, alto and/or tenor. She loves listening to a wide variety of music from classical to contemporary worship and pop music.  She loves performing and collaborating with other artists from our musical community.  Her favorite color is All of Them. \nKathy Corriel:  Harmony/Random Human:   Kathy is recently retired and a late bloomer in the local music scene\, although she’s been singing harmony since before she knew what it was.  She grew up in a very musical family and would often sing along with songs from the 40s to the 70s (the ‘Wonder Years’ of music).   She has been a soprano in several worship bands from the age of 17\, and also performed with Port Angeles Community Chorus in a production of ‘Handel’s Messiah’ and other classic operatic pieces.  Currently\, she feels blessed to be part of the Bread & Gravy family and the thriving local music community.   She loves Art\, Music\, Cats\, and PBJ sandwiches with cold milk.
