SUMMARY:Tenderly - The Life and Times of Nat King Cole
DESCRIPTION:Field Hall Presents: Tenderly – The Life and Times of Nat King Cole\nAugust 18th\, 19th\, and 20th @ 6PM | Sunset Bar & Lounge\n*Tickets $40\, 2 item food and beverage minimum | CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS\n*Our ticketing platform Ludus charges a 5% service fee for all card transactions. To avoid this fee\, visit our Box Office at 201 W. Front Street and pay via cash or check. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM. \nAward-winning artist Duane Forrest blends the timeless music of Nat King Cole with powerful storytelling in a captivating\, heartfelt exploration of legacy\, identity\, and quiet resistance. \nFrom Off-Broadway stages to international festivals\, Forrest invites audiences into an intimate\, soul-stirring journey through the life and influence of one of the 20th century’s most iconic voices. Blending velvety renditions of Cole’s classics with deeply personal reflection\, he explores how a Black man in 1950s America became a cultural pioneer — the first to host a nationally broadcast television show — while navigating a world that celebrated him onstage but resisted him off it. \nRaised in Toronto\, Forrest reflects on his own relationship with jazz — a genre born from Black roots\, yet often presented as distant or elite — and how discovering Cole’s music opened the door to spaces he once felt were not meant for him. \nThrough song\, story\, and striking theatrical imagery\, Tenderly is a moving meditation on influence\, dignity\, and the quiet power of simply showing up. \nUplifting\, personal\, and unforgettable: this is a must-see performance!  \n  \nABOUT DUANE FORREST\nDuane Forrest is a professional singer-songwriter and multimedia artist from Toronto\, Ontario.\nHis unique sound blends jazz\, reggae\, bossa nova\, soul\, and smooth vocals. Over the past decade\, Forrest has released two full-length original albums and toured in Canada three times\, in Europe four times\, and in Central America three times. He has secured radio play in Canada\, Germany\, Honduras\, Iceland\, Italy\, Nicaragua\, and the United States. His latest album\, The Climb\, reaches more than 4\,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. \nIn 2017\, Duane debuted his first theatre production\, Climb\, a live album experience based on his concept album\, The Climb. Duane also presented Climb at the 2018 Toronto Fringe Festival\, where Toronto Fringe founder Gregory Nixon described the show as “one of the highlights of this year’s Fringe.” Most recently in 2019 & 2022 Climb received glowing reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In 2023 Duane performed CLIMB at the Milan Fringe Festival and was runner up for “show of the festival”. He also debuted a new show called “Bob Marley: How reggae changed the world” that received a 5 star review from Broadway Baby. As he furthers his career\, Forrest aims to continue to push the boundaries of his art by delivering music in diverse storytelling formats. \nOur ticketing platform Ludus charges a 5% service fee for all card transactions. Many of his original songs and instrumental compositions are also infused with flavors of ethnic music from countries and regions where he drew inspiration from: Mongolia\, West Africa\, Middle East\, the Balkans\, Andalusian flamenco. \nTHE GLOBAL MUSICIAN: Ian Maksin was born in Leningrad\, former USSR\, into a multinational family and grew up absorbing many cultures and traditions from an early age. He began playing guitar and piano at age 3 and cello at age 6 at the School for Gifted Children in Leningrad and then came to the USA at 16 to continue studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. After working for many years in the classical genre including a three-year tenure with the New World Symphony in Miami Ian has decided to look for his own musical path. His diverse musical experience\, including playing rock and blues guitar and passion for jazz and world music has allowed him to take the cello to a new dimension and develop his own distinct style as a musician and composer. \nIn Ian’s own words: “At some point I realized that music is much more than mere entertainment. Music is one of most powerful and unifying forces in the world\, capable of healing\, inspiring\, bringing people together and bringing peace among them. I believe that cello will save the world”  \n\n\n\n\n\nOur mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Financial assistance is available for this event through our #fieldhallforall program. Patrons can request a discount of up to 100%. Click here to apply for financial assistance.

SUMMARY:Songwriter's Evening - The Roots Project with Martha Redbone & Aaron Whitby
DESCRIPTION:Field Hall Presents: Songwriter’s Evening – The Roots Project with Martha Redbone & Aaron Whitby\nThursday\, September 24 @ 7PM | Sunset Lounge\n*Tickets $44.50 General Admission\, $220 VIP table for 4 | CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS\nFinancial assistance available – click here to apply \n*Our ticketing platform Ludus charges a 5% service fee for all card transactions. To avoid this fee\, visit our Box Office at 201 W. Front Street and pay via cash or check. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM. \nLed by the extraordinary Martha Redbone and longtime collaborator Aaron Whitby\, The Roots Project is an experience that is more than a concert: a journey through American music\, storytelling\, and shared cultural memory. Hailed as “a brilliant collision of cultures\,” the ensemble weaves together folk\, blues\, gospel\, and soul with Indigenous musical traditions to create a sound that is at once timeless and urgently contemporary. \nIn this stripped-down songwriter format\, the evening unfolds with an intimate\, conversational energy. Redbone’s powerhouse vocals—shaped by her Afro-Indigenous heritage and Appalachian upbringing—blend with Whitby’s expressive piano and musical direction\, creating a rich sonic landscape that moves effortlessly between genres and emotional registers. Through story and song\, they share reflections on identity\, resilience\, and the human spirit\, inviting audiences not just to listen\, but to connect. \nExpect a performance that feels both deeply rooted and spontaneously alive: songs that draw from ancestral traditions and contemporary influences\, interwoven with humor\, history\, and heartfelt storytelling. Past performances by the Roots Project are known for their communal spirit—often blurring the line between stage and audience through call-and-response\, storytelling\, and a shared sense of purpose. \nSet against the sweeping waterfront views of the Sunset Lounge\, an intimate gathering space known for its warm ambiance\, craft cocktails\, and relaxed pre-show atmosphere\, this Songwriter’s Evening invites audiences into a deeply personal\, soul-stirring musical experience. \nWhether you’re discovering Martha Redbone for the first time or returning to her work\, this evening offers a rare opportunity to experience one of America’s most vital voices in an up-close\, immersive setting—where every note\, every story\, and every moment resonates. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nABOUT MARTHA REDBONE\nMartha Redbone is a vocalist\, songwriter\, composer and 2021 United States Artist fellow and multi award-winning musician\, she is celebrated for her tasty gumbo of roots music embodying the folk and mountain blues sounds of her childhood in the Appalachian hills of Black Mountain\, Kentucky\, infused with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn. Inheriting her powerful gospel-singing father’s voice and the resilient spirit of her mother’s Southeastern culture and heritage\, Redbone broadens the boundaries of American Roots music with songs and storytelling that give voice to issues of social justice\, connecting cultures and celebrating the human spirit. Martha works in partnership with longtime collaborator/husband Aaron Whitby. \nHer album The Garden of Love: Songs of William Blake (produced by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder and Grammy-winner John McEuen)\, is “a brilliant collision of cultures” (New Yorker). Redbone and Whitby are the composers\, arrangers and orchestrators of original music and score for the 2022 Broadway revival of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuff\, the 1976 classic choreopoem by the late Ntozake Shange\, which garnered seven Tony Award nominations and critical acclaim. Redbone and Whitby are the 2020 Drama Desk Award recipients for Outstanding Music in a Play and the 2020 Audelco Award recipient for Outstanding Composer of Original Music and Score for the Off-Broadway revival.\nABOUT AARON WHITBY\nAaron Whitby is an award-winning pianist\, songwriter\, composer\, record producer\, and engineer known for his work with an array of noteworthy artists\, including George Clinton\, Natalie Cole\, Randy Brecker. Born and bred in London\, England\, Whitby is best known for his work with his longtime collaborator and wife\, Martha Redbone. Whitby is the brainchild behind Cousin from Another Planet- a Jazz and Visual exploration project\, receiving critical acclaim and accolades from music journalist and critic Greg Tate as “Percolating\, stimulating and motor- booty activatin’…”. Additional works from the Redbone/Whitby composer team include “Revelation” by Flannery O’Connor directed by Karin Coonrod (2022)\, “HUMAN” an exploration in puppetry directed by Nehprii Amenii (2024)\, song contribution for “Primer for a Failed Superpower” directed by Rachel Chavkin (2019); “Flood in the Valley”\, a Chinese -American musical collaboration directed by Michael Liebenluft (2018)\, “Stars” – Privacy in the Digital Age in 5-Minute Plays (2018)\, commissioned by the New York Theater Workshop and Goethe Institute\, and many more. Whitby and Redbone are recipients of Creative Capital awardees\, the New England Foundation for the Arts Award\, MAPFund and National Performance Network Creation Fund. The team are currently in development with Black Mountain Women\, a new musical directed by Les Waters\, book by Naomi Iizuka\, commissioned by the Public Theater\, NY. As with Redbone\, we are excited to partner with Whitby because of his unique and energetic musical collaborations with Redbone that highlight\, preserve\, and share the stories\, cultures\, and voices of our country’s marginalized communities. \nOur mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Financial assistance is available for this event through our #fieldhallforall program. Patrons can request a discount of up to 100%. Click here to apply for financial assistance.

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 6th @ 9AM – 1:30PM\nTickets $30 for this segment | $70 for full festival pass\nClick here to see full festival schedule and featured storyteller bios\n9 – 10:15a: Concurrent Workshops\, Sunset Lounge \n• “Pin the Tail on the Narrative\, Sort of Lawn Darts meets Eudora Welty\,” with Andy Offutt Irwin  \nThis raucous workshop involves the careless dropping of pens* and carefully guided steps for developing personal narratives\, freeing participants to delve into the past and chip away at the unmovable stone of self-doubt to reveal the treasure of new stories. \nEach participant will be paired with a partner (a stranger is best). They’ll be guided to create a list of roles they have played throughout their life\, beginning in childhood\, and continuing on through their high school years\, work life\,  social life\,  family life\,  etc.   \nThree of these roles will be randomly and magically selected and paired with three unavoidable life experiences culled from a list of twenty.  Things like: Turning Point.  Choice.  Conflict.  Loss.  Challenge.  Decision… \nThree pairs will be whittled down\, and the most interesting pair will be picked by their partner. \nA story will be developed using the four elements of The Hero’s Journey:  Quest.  Obstacle.  Resolution.  New wisdom. \n*We will be literally dropping pens\, and I don’t toss the word literally around\, so the pen you bring to the workshop shouldn’t be your grandfather’s old fountain pen. A Bic® stolen from a motel is preferred.  \n• “Story Dynamics: Connecting with Your Audience\,” with Megan Wells \nWe can know a story in our bones\, AND\, the magic of delivering that story to an audience requires an extra layer of skills.  In this engaging hands-on workshop\, Megan will lead you in exercises that will further amplify your audience impact. \n  \n10:30 – 11:45a: Pacific Northwest Guild Tellers Performance\, Theater \nRepresenting The South Sound Storytelling Guild  of Olympia:  Sandra Niman  \nSandra Niman has used storytelling to introduce the periodic table\, to entertain giraffes and to explore the mysteries of existence. She has lived and traveled to many lands\, collecting tales and searching for meaning from the muddle of memory.\n  \nRepresenting the Fireside Storytellers League of Tacoma: Bonnie Anderson \n\n\n\n\nBonnie has as been telling stories pretty much all her life.  She even got a Girl Scout badge for it in Grade school!  Her parents watched the TV show “Hee-Haw” … she heard the barber on there tell fractured fairy tales\, and decided to tell Rindercella.  She was too young to know it should be hard\, so she just did it!  She’s been telling stories ever since\, to all ages\, and in all sorts of situations.  Her favorite stories are those that make you think\, and those that make you smile. And she firmly believes that the connection between storyteller and listener is MAGIC!\n  \nRepresenting the Portland Storytellers Guild: Steven Henegar – Storyteller & Monologist \n\n\n\n\nMid-westerner Steven Henegar celebrates the wonderful variety of stories we use to share our lives. He calls up the everyday and the fantastic to discover feelings and experiences that connect us all. The veteran performer and workshop leader blends the easy conversation of his family’s storytelling with incisive imagery and word play shaped by a decade in the theater. Truth & Lies mined from a long life looking around\n\n\n\nRepresenting the Victoria  Storytelling Guild is Jennifer Ferris \n\n\n\n\nJennifer Ferris has been telling stories beside the Salish Sea and beyond for 35 years. She has performed in schools\, at community events\, nature sanctuaries and festivals. She has used story to engage and entertain listeners of all ages. Acutely aware of the power of humour and language\, she loves to tell personal stories as well as tales of myth\, magic and transformation from around the world.\nShe is as enthusiastic about the work of other storytellers as she is about her own. She gives workshops to adults\, children\, families\, businesses and international students\n\n\n  \n\n\nRepresenting the Seattle Storytelling Guild: Barry McWilliams \n\n\n\n\nBarry McWilliams has been telling stories since the mid 1980’s with a broad variety of traditional folklore\, cultural\, trickster\, and original tales. Food and drinks are available to purchase throughout the event. \nABOUT DEADWOOD REVIVAL \nKim Trenerry and Jason Mogi met in Atlanta\, GA during the mid 90’s. She was a veteran performer in musical theatre\, and he was a drummer playing with various groups in the local blues\, folk\, and jam-band scene. They both ended up in the same band (Kim as a doo-wop girl\, Jason on drums) and started hanging out between gigs playing guitars and singing Neil Young tunes. Inspired by the pure sound of their harmonies and frustrated with hectic city life\, they decided to abandon their current directions and head to the Pacific Northwest to try something new. They performed as an acoustic duo in the coffee shops and bars of Port Angeles\, WA as “Tongue and Groove” and were an immediate hit. T&G eventually added several other members\, went electric and evolved into one of the Olympic Peninsula’s favorite bands\, releasing three CD’s and playing everything from late-night Dead-esque jams in local bars to the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle. \nWith the confidence and experience gained from fronting a successful band and hungry to keep performing\, Kim and Jason went in a new and completely different direction. Jason picked up the claw-hammer style banjo while Kim explored old country-style rhythm guitar. And the duo “Deadwood Revival” was born. Learn more at https://www.deadwoodrevival.net/ \n  \nABOUT OPEN MIC MONDAYS\nOpen Mic Mondays are a once-monthly event at Field Hall that welcomes creative people to share their talents! Originally hosted by Bread & Gravy Duo\, Open Mic now features a rotating community host\, allowing audiences to learn more about the vibrant arts community in Port Angeles. Performers of all genres are welcomed to join us and enter for a time slot: from songwriters and poets to magicians and jugglers – all talents are welcome!
