SUMMARY:Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense
DESCRIPTION:Field Hall Presents\nTalking Heads: Stop Making Sense\nFriday\, January 10 @ 7:30PM | Sunset Lounge Dance Party \nTickets $20 General Admission CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS \nShake off the January blues with a special evening in the Sunset Lounge dedicated to Talking Heads featuring a screening of the acclaimed concert film Stop Making Sense. Dance on the dance floor\, choose from themed specialty cocktails and mocktails\, and grab a bite from our Sunset Lounge menu! \nStop Making Sense brings to the screen Talking Heads at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December 1983: David Byrne\, Tina Weymouth\, Chris Frantz\, and Jerry Harrison\, alongside backing singers Lynn Mabry and Ednah Holt\, guitarist Alex Weir\, keyboardist Bernie Worrell and percussionist Steve Scales. Regarded as the best concert film of all time\, renowned filmmaker Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs) captures the band at their exhilarating best\, in this new and complete restoration for the film’s 40th anniversary. \n \nStop Making Sense was shot while Talking Heads were on tour promoting their 1983 album\, Speaking in Tongues. Stop Making Sense includes performances of the early Talking Heads single\, “Psycho Killer” (1977)\, through to their most recent hit at the time\, “Burning Down the House” (1983). It also includes songs from the solo career of frontman David Byrne and by Tom Tom Club\, the side project of drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth. \nIn 2021\, Stop Making Sense was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant.”  A special 4K restoration of the film was re-released in theaters in September 2023 by A24; this event will show the restored version. \nField Arts & Events Hall does not generally provide advisories about subject matter or potentially triggering content in films\, as sensitivities vary from person to person. SUMMARY:Open Mic Mondays hosted by Bread & Gravy Duo
DESCRIPTION:Field Arts & Events Hall welcomes you to share your talent on our Sunset Lounge stage! Join us for Open Mic Mondays in the Sunset Lounge\, hosted by Bread & Gravy Duo. \nThe Sunset Bar & Lounge opens to the public at 5PM and will serve small bites and drinks throughout the event. Signup for open mic begins at 6PM; open mic starts at 6:15PM. This is a free\, all-ages event – no RSVP or ticket required. \nABOUT BREAD & GRAVY\nBread & Gravy Duo is a popular husband and wife act (Stephanie and Jess Doenges) who perform songs across many styles and genres. They feature powerful female vocals\, eclectic piano\, rhythm guitar\, and the occasional flute and harmonica. They have hosted or cohosted many Open Mics on the peninsula\, including ‘Open Mic at the Buzz’\, ‘The Junction Open Jam’\, ‘The Rainshadow Open Mic’\, and most recently at ‘Open Mic at the Sit-N-Bull’. They often play as a bigger band\, adding steady stalwarts such as Jerry Gilleland (drums) and Jason Taylor (bass and harmonies) and have also collaborated with dozens of other local musicians\, so one never knows who will come sit in with them on a given night. Follow @breadandgravymusic for more. \nSTEPHANIE DOENGES (SOUND)\nStephanie is one of the most established and recognized musicians on the peninsula. She has been playing music since a young age\, and has been in local bands such as Restless\, Luck of the Draw\, Rolling Waters\, and the Cornstalks. For the past twelve years\, she has been the face and voice of Bread and Gravy in all of its formations. While her voice is a main draw\, and guitar is her most common instrument\, she often surprises and astounds with riveting flute and harmonica solos. \nStephanie has run sound for Open Mics for many years now\, and she’s grown very adept at dialing people in quickly\, as well as tailoring the sound to any nuance the performer displays. \nJESS DOENGES (MC)\nJess is the quintessential late bloomer\, who didn’t touch a musical instrument until age 29. Bread & Gravy is the first and only band he’s ever been in. In juxtaposition to the versatile Stephanie\, he’s a one trick pony on the piano. But his love for piano\, and his love for Stephanie shows through in his playing\, and he has truly played himself into one of the top accompanists around. As an MC\, he has tons of experience herding cats (err.. musicians) to make the Open Mic experience enjoyable and fair for all involved. His quick wit and inviting vibe tend to make the audience comfortable and relaxed\, which is what is needed to have a supportive environment for all performers.

Morris Theater\nTickets $35-$75  CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS \nFlamenco in its purest form: an evening of duets\, solos\, and company pieces by Martín Santangelo\, Soledad Barrio\, and Noche Flamenca. \nSoledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca\, the renowned company founded by Artistic Director Martín Santangelo and dancer Soledad Barrio\, return with a new version of La Ronde (Between You and Me)\, an evening-length program of duets and ensemble works. \nApollinaire Scherr\, in a review for The Financial Times\, described La Ronde “as flamenco puro—the Spanish art stripped to its flammable core.” Brian Seibert wrote in The New York Times\, “The visual design is no more elaborate than cafe chairs and a spotlight. The wonderful musicians and the dancers’ feet are barely amplified. That’s all in accord with the company aesthetic: bare bones\, nothing to hide behind\, nothing to get in the way.”  \n“La Ronde\,” a work inspired by Max Ophüls’ 1950 film\, and the dizzying carousel of romantic and sexual relationships it presents\, that Noche Flamenca has been developing for four years. True to the company’s boundary-pushing and emotionally probing style\, in “La Ronde\,” artistic director and choreographer Martin Santangelo uses a series of duets to explore love\, hate\, jealousy\, and death. The piece draws inspiration from Ingmar Bergman’s Persona\, the pianist James Booker\, the story of Cain and Abel\, Demeter & Persephone\, and other sources\, in addition to Ophüls. \nAlso part of the program is “Refugiados” (“Refugees”)\, created from poems by children in refugee camps. To develop “Refugiados”—first created 15 years ago\, and further developed for the engagement at the Connelly—Santangelo and the company took the children’s poems\, translated them to Spanish\, and set them to song and dance. \nFinally\, La Ronde includes Soledad’s Barrio’s signature\, “Soleá\,” which exemplifies the catharsis at the heart of flamenco. In it\, she displays the singular artistry Tobi Tobias attributed to her in ArtsJournal\, where she wrote\, “What woman could hold a candle to Soledad Barrio? In modern dance\, Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham. In ballet\, maybe Nora Kaye\, in her Tudor roles. Certainly no one we can go and see today has Barrio’s transformative power.”

SUMMARY:Altan
DESCRIPTION:Altan: A St. Patrick’s Day Celebration\nSunday\, March 16 @ 2PM | Donna M. Morris Theater\nTickets $32-$55  CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS \n“THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE CELTIC REALM” – The Boston Globe  \nWith a career in Irish music spanning 35 years\, Altan has achieved legendary status in a genre that has been equally shaped by the band’s influence and genius. Audiences from Ireland to Japan to Australia to Europe have embraced their heartwarming\, dynamic live performances and their exquisitely produced\, award-winning recordings. Over a dozen releases to date\, ranging from the most touching old Irish songs to hard-hitting reels and jigs. Altan’s newest release\, 2018’s The Gap of Dreams\, follows their acclaimed 2015 album\, The Widening Gyre. \nAdding to their long list of awards and honors\, fiddler\, singer and founding member Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh was the recipient of the Gradam Ceoil/Traditional Musician of the Year in 2017. Though the band received the same award for Band of the Year in 2001\, Mairéad was glad to be recognized on her own in a genre that has been slow to recognize female musicians. She is only the third woman in twenty years to receive the main award. \nThroughout their career\, you’ll find Altan’s unwavering commitment to bringing the beauty of traditional music to contemporary audiences\, particularly that of the fiddlers and singers of their hometown in Donegal. \nThe seeds of Altan lie in the music and spontaneity of sessions in kitchens and pubs in their hometown of Donegal\, where their music was heard in an atmosphere of respect and intimacy. It is here that the band’s heart still lies\, whether they are performing on TV in Australia or jamming with Ricky Skaggs on the West Coast of the United States. Despite a hectic touring and recording schedule\, Altan continues fresh in its vision of bringing the beauty and joy of traditional music to audiences everywhere\, and has always promised itself to continue as long as it’s fun — fortunately\, it still is!
