DESCRIPTION:Everyone Deserves To Be Seen \nOn Display Aug 21-Oct 24 | The Laura Cooksey Gallery at Field Hall\nFREE ADMISSION \n\n\n\nFrom August 21st – October 24th the Laura Cooksey Gallery at Field Hall will host a shared exhibit of photography by Steve Raber and clothing design by Joyce Nadig from 1982 – 1987. \nSteve Raber’s photographs preserve both private moments and big\, bold and joyous pronunciation of character from the straight and queer bars of mid-1980s Los Angeles. Joyce Nadig’s clothing collections from the mid-1980s reveals a discipline built on fabric\, silhouettes\, and intentional design. \nJoyce and Steve grew up together in Port Angeles and graduated from Port Angeles High School with the class of 1971. \n\nGallery hours are 10AM – 2PM Monday through Saturday. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM.  \nGet up-close and personal with one of America’s most celebrated contemporary composers\, Jessie Montgomery\, as she engages in a Community Conversation and Q&A about her career and the new work she is composing as an Artist in Residence at Field Hall. \nThe evening will open with students of the PAHS Orchestra performing Strum\, one of Jessie’s original compositions which they learned while studying her work with Nathan Rødahl\, PAHS Orchestra Director. Strum was the state-winning piece as performed by the 25-26 PAHS Chamber Orchestra at the WMEA State Solo and Ensemble contest. The event will conclude with a Q&A with Jessie\, giving audience members an opportunity to learn more about her work\, inspirations\, and creative process. \nABOUT FIELD HALL ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE \nThe Artists-in-Residence (AIR) Program at Field Arts & Events Hall transforms Port Angeles into a center for artistic creation\, cultural exchange\, and community engagement. Building upon Field Hall’s mission to be a home for arts and events that bring people together and strengthen community\, the AIR program shifts the organization beyond traditional presenting into a model of artistic creation and production. Artists are invited to the North Olympic Peninsula for extended residencies to develop new work while engaging deeply with local residents through workshops\, masterclasses\, lectures\, open rehearsals\, school visits\, and public performances. \nThrough partnerships with schools\, libraries\, senior centers\, cultural organizations\, and regional arts institutions\, the program creates meaningful opportunities for community members to participate in the creative process itself\, fostering lifelong learning and strengthening the cultural vitality of the region. \nJessie Montgomery will use her residency to advance the creative development of a new opera project intended for future production in partnership with the Metropolitan Opera. The residency will provide dedicated time for musical exploration\, collaboration\, and public engagement around the process of creating large-scale contemporary opera. \nABOUT NATHAN RØDAHL \nThree-time GRAMMY nominated Music Educator Nathan Rødahl has served as Director of Orchestras at Port Angeles High School for nearly a decade. He leads the program’s long-standing quadrennial tours to New York City and has expanded opportunities for North Olympic string players through international performance tours to Central Europe. \nNationally active in music education\, Rødahl served two terms as Northwest Chair on NAfME’s National Orchestra Council\, served as a Teacher Leader with the federally funded Connected Arts Networks (CAN)\, and is a nationally recognized presenter on emergent research and string pedagogy.  Locally\, he serves on the staff of the Wintergrass Festival Orchestra and cofounded the weekly Port Angeles Community String Jam. \nABOUT JESSIE MONTGOMERY \nJessie Montgomery is a GRAMMY® Award-winning composer\, violinist\, and educator whose work interweaves classical music with elements of vernacular music\, improvisation\, poetry\, and social consciousness\, establishing her as an acute interpreter of 21st-century American sound and experience. Named Performance Today’s 2025 Classical Woman of the Year\, her profound works have been described as “turbulent\, wildly colorful\, and exploding with life” (The Washington Post)\, and are performed regularly by leading orchestras\, ensembles\, and soloists around the world. \nA founding member of PUBLIQuartet and a former member of the Catalyst Quartet\, Montgomery is a frequent and highly engaged collaborator with performing musicians\, composers\, choreographers\, playwrights\, poets\, and visual artists alike. Luca’s creative style\, which led him to invent instruments like the Reversed Triple Neck Guitar and the Reversed Slide Neck\, vastly contributed to the modern evolution of acoustic guitar. \nKnown worldwide for his explosive fingerstyle technique\, alternate tunings\, and multi-neck guitars\, Stricagnoli transforms the acoustic guitar into a full orchestra—blending melody\, rhythm\, percussion\, and harmony into a single\, unforgettable performance. His original compositions and reimagined covers push the boundaries of what’s possible on six strings\, delivering both technical brilliance and pure entertainment. \nHe has been hailed as a phenomenon and a prodigy by influential magazines and newspapers all over the world\, including NME\, Guitar World\, Der Spiegel\, La Repubblica\, Daily Sabah\, Frankfurter Allgemeine and more. \nLocal fans will recognize him from performances at Juan de Fuca Festival for the Arts. \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT LUCA STRICAGNOLI\nLuca started his career at the age of 10\, studying classical guitar and later attending the Conservatory\, the most prestigious music school in Italy. He excelled in classical competitions\, placing 1st at the contest “Cittá di Lissone”\, and when he finally discovered Fingerstyle Guitar\, he began spending endless hours on YouTube\, learning techniques just by watching videos. Using his acoustic guitar\, he won even more competitions\, such as the Acoustic Guitar Contest “VII Festival Internazionale Della Chitarra di Fiuggi” with a score of 100/100\, the “Festival dei Talenti” and an opportunity to open for Legendary Italian band New Trolls. Meanwhile\, Luca met the Italian luthier Davide Serracini\, with whom he collaborated ever since. \nIn the coming years\, Luca started creating his own unique style\, which included utilizing violin bows\, multiple guitars at once\, modified capos and unusual tunings. His breakthrough came when his arrangement ‘The Last Of The Mohicans’ was picked up by Candyrat Records\, the most influential Fingerstyle label\, and quickly reached streaming numbers in the millions. After this success\, Luca was asked to release his debut album. The lead single\, a brilliant rendition of ‘Thunderstruck\,’ went viral with over 14 million views in just a few weeks\, which led to him being invited to perform all around the world. \nLuca started an intense touring activity and a few years later published his second album ‘What If?’\, which incorporated many of the unorthodox ideas that he had been working on\, like the Reversed Triple Neck Guitar. This instrument\, which featured the first reversed neck in guitar’s history\, went viral once again\, causing Luca’s career to skyrocket\, with performances at events for Nobel Prize Winners and Top CEOs\, as well as having his music featured in countless television shows. \nLuca started his own YouTube channel and quickly amassed hundred-thousands of followers\, winning the Creator Award while at the same time collaborating with his wife\, the award-winning singer/songwriter Meg Pfeiffer. It’s there on the map\, marking place and time. Yet\, the river changes as it remains a constant\, carving away at the edges\, making new pathways\, gaining strength as it progresses forward. The Travelin’ McCourys are that river. \nThe McCoury brothers—Ronnie (mandolin) and Rob (banjo)—were born into the bluegrass tradition. Talk about a source abundant and pure: their father\, Del\, is among the most influential and successful musicians in the history of the genre. Years on the road with Dad in the Del McCoury Band honed their knife-edge chops and encouraged the duo to imagine how traditional bluegrass could cut innovative pathways into 21st century music. \n“If you put your mind\, your skills\, and your ability to it\, I think you can make just about anything work on bluegrass instruments\,” says Ronnie. “That’s a really fun part of this—figuring the new stuff out and surprising the audience.” \nThe newest member of the band\, fiddler Christian Ward\, joined after Jason Carter moved on to pursue a solo career. Bassist Alan Bartram\, and Cody Kilby on guitar\, they assembled a group that could take what they had in their DNA\, the traditions they learned and heard\, and push the music forward. In fact\, the band became the only group to have each of its members recognized with an International Bluegrass Music Association Award for their instrument at least once. There were peers\, too\, that could see bluegrass as both historic and progressive. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Allman Brothers Band\, improv-rock kings Phish\, and jamband contemporary Keller Williams were just a few that formed a mutual admiration society with the ensemble. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe band played the Allman’s Wanee Festival and guitarist Warren Haynes’ Christmas Jam—an annual holiday homecoming of Southern music. An early-years jam with the Lee Boys was hailed by many as the highlight of the evening\, and with the video catching fire online\, earned a legion of new\, young fans of their supercharged combination of sacred steel\, R&B\, and bluegrass. There were unforgettable collaborations with country smash Dierks Bentley\, onstage magic jamming with titans String Cheese Incident and Phish\, cutting an album with Keller (Pick)\, and creating the Grateful Ball—a tribute concert-turned-tour bridging bluegrass with the iconic music of the Grateful Dead. \n“That’s something that’s part of us being who we are\,” says Ronnie. “It comes\, too\, with us plugging in. It gets louder\, for sure. We can’t be another version of our dad’s band. It wouldn’t make any sense for us to do that.” \nTheir concerts became can’t-miss events\, whether headlining historic venues or as festival favorites\, drawing the love and respect of a growing fanbase craving their eclectic repertoire. At the 2016 edition of DelFest\, an annual gathering of the genre’s best aptly named for the McCoury patriarch\, the band delivered the take-away highlight. Rolling Stone called it “a sublime combination of rock and bluegrass\, contemporary and classic\, old and young. The best set of the festival…” The river was going new places\, getting stronger. It was time to re-draw the map. \n“We’ve tried to pick songs we think people are going to enjoy\,” says Ronnie. “Something we learned from our dad is that a good song is a good song. It can be done in any way.” \nSo arrives the long-awaited\, self-titled debut album from the quintet. A brilliantly executed set overflowing with inventive style\, stellar musicianship\, and\, of course\, plenty of burnin’ grass\, the 14-song collection is a true culmination of their decades-long journey. From the headwaters of Bill Monroe and the waves of Jerry Garcia to a sound both rooted and revolutionary\, soulful and transcending that belongs only to the Travelin’ McCourys. \n“The album definitely shows what we’ve evolved into as a band. And it’s a pretty good representation of what’s happening with the whole genre\,” says Rob. “The old bluegrass material is something I love but it’s been done many times. She has been seen here at Field Hall many times\, including at last summer’s Shakespeare at Sunset\, Broadway at Sunset\, and from time to time as bandleader in the Free Jazz Sunday series. \nSince relocating to the Pacific Northwest from New York City Dowdell has worked steadily at Key City Public Theatre in Port Townsend\, most recently as composer/lyricist of WILD MAN OF THE WYNOOCHEE\, the award-winning musical she wrote in collaboration with bookwriter/lyricist Jessica Welsh\, produced at KCPT in 2024. Watch for its upcoming regional tour\, kicking off in January 2027 right here at Field Hall! \nA close partnership with KCPT Artistic Director Denise Winter has developed over the years. They have combined forces on original productions like the award-winning holiday musical SPIRIT OF THE YULE\, the musical revue TIN PAN LADY\, several original holiday spectaculars\, and many musicals from MURDER BALLAD to DADDY LONG LEGS. \nDowdell is a member of the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop\, where she was awarded the Harrington Award for Creative Achievement in developing new work for the musical stage. Other awards include Meet the Composer\, ArtsWA\, James Irvine Foundation and SoundOnStage. \nAs a pianist\, Dowdell has performed with Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra\, and her arrangement of Carefully Taught / Children Will Listen will receive its premiere at PASO’s upcoming Pops Concert in September\, featuring Port Angeles and Sequim High School Choruses. Her choral works have enjoyed premieres by NorthWest Women’s Chorale\, Schola Cantorum of Edinburgh and Rainshadow Chorale. \n  \n  \nJennifer Saul (stage manager\, choreographer) is an educator who is passionate about making the performing arts accessible for children and is finishing her 30th year as an educator. She has choreographed numerous productions for regional theatres\, with favorites including The Music Man\, Something’s Afoot\, Quilters\, Nunsense\, and most recently\, Urinetown. She has also enjoyed performing in many local productions over the years. Jennifer earned a BA in Fine Arts – Dance from the University of California\, Irvine. \nJennifer considers it both an honor and a privilege to be involved in Field Hall’s “at Sunset” series and is deeply grateful to work alongside such a talented\, collaborative\, and dedicated cast\, crew\, and directing team. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM.  \nThe Story People of Clallam County invite you to spin a yarn at the annual LIARS CONTEST! Up to 8 tellers will have 8 minutes each (plus a 1-minute grace period) to tell their best lie. Stories must be told\, NOT read. An esteemed panel of judges will determine the winner. \nReturning crowd favorites include Doug Woodall (reigning champion)\, Ken Dubuc (retired PA Fire Chief and former champion) and Toby Anderson. Also featured this year are liars Bob Nuffer\, Emma Amiad\, Mitch Nelson\, Bowen Lee\, and Lisa Turecek. \nThe competition will be judged by Dr. Mark Fischer (Field Hall board member)\,  LaTrisha Suggs (Port Angeles city councilor)\, and Christy Wright (program director of the Story People). Lex Meyers will serve as the timer for the event. \nMC Ingrid Nixon is\, herself\, a champion liar who has fibbed from coast to coast. She is also an award-winning storyteller\, retired National Park Service ranger\, and expedition guide who loves taking audiences on journeys of the imagination. Ingrid holds a Masters in Storytelling and performs at festivals throughout the states\, including the National Storytelling Festival. She hosts/produces “Story Borealis\,” a program dedicated to the art of oral storytelling on National Public Radio affiliate KBBI.org. She hails from Alaska.
