DESCRIPTION:Everyone Deserves To Be Seen \nOn Display Aug 21-Oct 24 | The Laura Cooksey Gallery at Field Hall\nFREE ADMISSION \n\n\n\nFrom August 21st – October 24th the Laura Cooksey Gallery at Field Hall will host a shared exhibit of photography by Steve Raber and clothing design by Joyce Nadig from 1982 – 1987. \nSteve Raber’s photographs preserve both private moments and big\, bold and joyous pronunciation of character from the straight and queer bars of mid-1980s Los Angeles. Joyce Nadig’s clothing collections from the mid-1980s reveals a discipline built on fabric\, silhouettes\, and intentional design. \nJoyce and Steve grew up together in Port Angeles and graduated from Port Angeles High School with the class of 1971. \n\nGallery hours are 10AM – 2PM Monday through Saturday. At this time Ian Maksin sings in Ukrainian\, Polish\, Russian\, English\, Farsi\, Armenian\, French\, Italian\, Arabic\, Hebrew\, Mongolian\, Bambara (one of the tongues spoken in West Africa) and many other exotic languages. Most of this repertoire was amassed by Maksin during his world travels\, jam sessions and collaborations with local musicians. Many of his original songs and instrumental compositions are also infused with flavors of ethnic music from countries and regions where he drew inspiration from: Mongolia\, West Africa\, Middle East\, the Balkans\, Andalusian flamenco. \nTHE GLOBAL MUSICIAN: Ian Maksin was born in Leningrad\, former USSR\, into a multinational family and grew up absorbing many cultures and traditions from an early age. He began playing guitar and piano at age 3 and cello at age 6 at the School for Gifted Children in Leningrad and then came to the USA at 16 to continue studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. After working for many years in the classical genre including a three-year tenure with the New World Symphony in Miami Ian has decided to look for his own musical path. His diverse musical experience\, including playing rock and blues guitar and passion for jazz and world music has allowed him to take the cello to a new dimension and develop his own distinct style as a musician and composer. \nIn Ian’s own words: “At some point I realized that music is much more than mere entertainment. Music is one of most powerful and unifying forces in the world\, capable of healing\, inspiring\, bringing people together and bringing peace among them. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM.  \nField Arts & Events Hall is thrilled to partner with our friends at JFFA for another “In Harmony” event\, and our third installation of our Candlelight series.  Over 2\,000 glowing candles set the scene for a night of music\, stories\, and entertainment. \nLuca Stricagnoli is considered to be one of the most unique guitarists in the world. Luca’s creative style\, which led him to invent instruments like the Reversed Triple Neck Guitar and the Reversed Slide Neck\, vastly contributed to the modern evolution of acoustic guitar. \nKnown worldwide for his explosive fingerstyle technique\, alternate tunings\, and multi-neck guitars\, Stricagnoli transforms the acoustic guitar into a full orchestra—blending melody\, rhythm\, percussion\, and harmony into a single\, unforgettable performance. His original compositions and reimagined covers push the boundaries of what’s possible on six strings\, delivering both technical brilliance and pure entertainment. \nHe has been hailed as a phenomenon and a prodigy by influential magazines and newspapers all over the world\, including NME\, Guitar World\, Der Spiegel\, La Repubblica\, Daily Sabah\, Frankfurter Allgemeine and more. \nLocal fans will recognize him from performances at Juan de Fuca Festival for the Arts. \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT LUCA STRICAGNOLI\nLuca started his career at the age of 10\, studying classical guitar and later attending the Conservatory\, the most prestigious music school in Italy. He excelled in classical competitions\, placing 1st at the contest “Cittá di Lissone”\, and when he finally discovered Fingerstyle Guitar\, he began spending endless hours on YouTube\, learning techniques just by watching videos. Using his acoustic guitar\, he won even more competitions\, such as the Acoustic Guitar Contest “VII Festival Internazionale Della Chitarra di Fiuggi” with a score of 100/100\, the “Festival dei Talenti” and an opportunity to open for Legendary Italian band New Trolls. Meanwhile\, Luca met the Italian luthier Davide Serracini\, with whom he collaborated ever since. \nIn the coming years\, Luca started creating his own unique style\, which included utilizing violin bows\, multiple guitars at once\, modified capos and unusual tunings. His breakthrough came when his arrangement ‘The Last Of The Mohicans’ was picked up by Candyrat Records\, the most influential Fingerstyle label\, and quickly reached streaming numbers in the millions. After this success\, Luca was asked to release his debut album. The lead single\, a brilliant rendition of ‘Thunderstruck\,’ went viral with over 14 million views in just a few weeks\, which led to him being invited to perform all around the world. \nLuca started an intense touring activity and a few years later published his second album ‘What If?’\, which incorporated many of the unorthodox ideas that he had been working on\, like the Reversed Triple Neck Guitar. This instrument\, which featured the first reversed neck in guitar’s history\, went viral once again\, causing Luca’s career to skyrocket\, with performances at events for Nobel Prize Winners and Top CEOs\, as well as having his music featured in countless television shows. \nLuca started his own YouTube channel and quickly amassed hundred-thousands of followers\, winning the Creator Award while at the same time collaborating with his wife\, the award-winning singer/songwriter Meg Pfeiffer. Together\, they won the European Songwriting Award and 10 prizes at the German Rock & Pop Awards\, and embarked on highly successful tours. \nOn his 3rd album\, ‘Change of Rules’\, Luca debuted even more inventions such as the “Guitar Ring” but also the “Reversed Slide Neck”\, a unique attachable guitar neck which received incredible online success and even the praise of New Atlas\, one of the world’s largest international science and technology publications. \nLuca has played around 100 shows a year\, from small concerts in remote towns to massive shows at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv; from private events for clients like Formula 1\, Hard Rock Hotel\, Infosys\, and BNSF Railways\, to sold-out concerts in prestigious philharmonics\, theatres and performing arts centers. Inheriting her powerful gospel-singing father’s voice and the resilient spirit of her mother’s Southeastern culture and heritage\, Redbone broadens the boundaries of American Roots music with songs and storytelling that give voice to issues of social justice\, connecting cultures and celebrating the human spirit. Redbone and Whitby are the 2020 Drama Desk Award recipients for Outstanding Music in a Play and the 2020 Audelco Award recipient for Outstanding Composer of Original Music and Score for the Off-Broadway revival.\nABOUT AARON WHITBY\nAaron Whitby is an award-winning pianist\, songwriter\, composer\, record producer\, and engineer known for his work with an array of noteworthy artists\, including George Clinton\, Natalie Cole\, Randy Brecker. Born and bred in London\, England\, Whitby is best known for his work with his longtime collaborator and wife\, Martha Redbone. Whitby is the brainchild behind Cousin from Another Planet- a Jazz and Visual exploration project\, receiving critical acclaim and accolades from music journalist and critic Greg Tate as “Percolating\, stimulating and motor- booty activatin’…”. Additional works from the Redbone/Whitby composer team include “Revelation” by Flannery O’Connor directed by Karin Coonrod (2022)\, “HUMAN” an exploration in puppetry directed by Nehprii Amenii (2024)\, song contribution for “Primer for a Failed Superpower” directed by Rachel Chavkin (2019); “Flood in the Valley”\, a Chinese -American musical collaboration directed by Michael Liebenluft (2018)\, “Stars” – Privacy in the Digital Age in 5-Minute Plays (2018)\, commissioned by the New York Theater Workshop and Goethe Institute\, and many more. Whitby and Redbone are recipients of Creative Capital awardees\, the New England Foundation for the Arts Award\, MAPFund and National Performance Network Creation Fund. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 6th @ 9AM – 1:30PM\nTickets $30 for this segment | $70 for full festival pass\nClick here to see full festival schedule and featured storyteller bios\n9 – 10:15a: Concurrent Workshops\, Sunset Lounge \n• “Pin the Tail on the Narrative\, Sort of Lawn Darts meets Eudora Welty\,” with Andy Offutt Irwin  \nThis raucous workshop involves the careless dropping of pens* and carefully guided steps for developing personal narratives\, freeing participants to delve into the past and chip away at the unmovable stone of self-doubt to reveal the treasure of new stories. \nEach participant will be paired with a partner (a stranger is best). They’ll be guided to create a list of roles they have played throughout their life\, beginning in childhood\, and continuing on through their high school years\, work life\,  social life\,  family life\,  etc.   \nThree of these roles will be randomly and magically selected and paired with three unavoidable life experiences culled from a list of twenty.  Things like: Turning Point.  Choice.  Conflict.  Loss.  Challenge.  Decision… \nThree pairs will be whittled down\, and the most interesting pair will be picked by their partner. \nA story will be developed using the four elements of The Hero’s Journey:  Quest.  Obstacle.  Resolution.  New wisdom. \n*We will be literally dropping pens\, and I don’t toss the word literally around\, so the pen you bring to the workshop shouldn’t be your grandfather’s old fountain pen. A Bic® stolen from a motel is preferred.  \n• “Story Dynamics: Connecting with Your Audience\,” with Megan Wells \nWe can know a story in our bones\, AND\, the magic of delivering that story to an audience requires an extra layer of skills.  In this engaging hands-on workshop\, Megan will lead you in exercises that will further amplify your audience impact. \n  \n10:30 – 11:45a: Pacific Northwest Guild Tellers Performance\, Theater \nRepresenting The South Sound Storytelling Guild  of Olympia:  Sandra Niman  \nSandra Niman has used storytelling to introduce the periodic table\, to entertain giraffes and to explore the mysteries of existence. A retired teacher\, she has also been a radio host and the director of a certificate in storytelling program. She has lived and traveled to many lands\, collecting tales and searching for meaning from the muddle of memory.\n  \nRepresenting the Fireside Storytellers League of Tacoma: Bonnie Anderson \n\n\n\n\nBonnie has as been telling stories pretty much all her life.  She even got a Girl Scout badge for it in Grade school!  Her parents watched the TV show “Hee-Haw” … she heard the barber on there tell fractured fairy tales\, and decided to tell Rindercella.  She was too young to know it should be hard\, so she just did it!  She’s been telling stories ever since\, to all ages\, and in all sorts of situations.  Her favorite stories are those that make you think\, and those that make you smile. And she firmly believes that the connection between storyteller and listener is MAGIC!\n  \nRepresenting the Portland Storytellers Guild: Steven Henegar – Storyteller & Monologist \n\n\n\n\nMid-westerner Steven Henegar celebrates the wonderful variety of stories we use to share our lives. He calls up the everyday and the fantastic to discover feelings and experiences that connect us all. The veteran performer and workshop leader blends the easy conversation of his family’s storytelling with incisive imagery and word play shaped by a decade in the theater. Truth & Lies mined from a long life looking around\n\n\n\nRepresenting the Victoria  Storytelling Guild is Jennifer Ferris \n\n\n\n\nJennifer Ferris has been telling stories beside the Salish Sea and beyond for 35 years. She has performed in schools\, at community events\, nature sanctuaries and festivals.She has used story to engage and entertain listeners of all ages. Acutely aware of the power of humour and language\, she loves to tell personal stories as well as tales of myth\, magic and transformation from around the world.\nShe is as enthusiastic about the work of other storytellers as she is about her own. She gives workshops to adults\, children\, families\, businesses and international students\n\n\n  \n\n\nRepresenting the Seattle Storytelling Guild: Barry McWilliams \n\n\n\n\nBarry McWilliams has been telling stories since the mid 1980’s with a broad variety of traditional folklore\, cultural\, trickster\, and original tales. He especially likes tales with an unusual twist.\nBarry has served on the Seattle Storytellers Guild’s board (including as President from 2016-2022) and has edited In The Wind\, SSG’s Quarterly newsletter\, for over a decade. He has been the Zoom host of the Guilds online story swaps and monthly StoryFests since 2020. Barry was honored with their Golden Circle certificate in 2022. Eldrbarry’s Story Telling Page” (eldrbarry.net) has promoted the art of storytelling and the joy of story listening on the internet since 1995. Barry recently served on the National Storytelling Network’s Board representing the Producers and Organizers Special Interest Group for three years. In the two decades since his first major single\, “Superman (It’s Not Easy)\,” hit the stratosphere\, the artist has both evolved and come back ‘round full circle. \nTo date\, Five For Fighting\, has released six studio LPs\, including the platinum certified America Town and The Battle for Everything; and the top-10 charting Two Lights\, along with an EP and live albums. Ondrasik has penned major hits\, including the chart-topping “100 Years\,” “The Riddle\,” “Chances\,” “World\,” and “Easy Tonight\,” which have earned over one billion streams and place him as a top-10 Hot Adult Contemporary artist for the 2000s. The reflective “100 Years” has joined “Superman (It’s Not Easy)” as part of the American Songbook and continues to stand the test of time at weddings\, birthdays\, graduations\, memorials\, and many a home video.
