DESCRIPTION:VOYAGES MONOCHROMATIQUES “MONOCHROMATIC JOURNEYS”\nOn Display April 15 – June 15 in the Laura Cooksey Gallery at Field Hall\nFree admission\, donations appreciated \n\n\nWithout color\, light and composition are put sharply into focus to create a fresh perspective. Local photographers Thompson Holmes\, Richard Kohler\, Ernst-Ulrich Schäfer and Philippe Tauran are have been working in the medium of monochrome photography for many years collectively. Through much effort and practice\, they have found that the essence of visual subject matter can genuinely be shown in monochromatic style. \nThe light and the composition are very important in capturing the moment: everything is expressed in terms of light\, from bright white to dark black\, and in many wonderful shades of gray in between. This is a celebration of black and white photography – a unique artistic experience which challenges the viewer to see beyond color. \nGallery hours are 10AM – 2PM Monday through Saturday. She was also MVP of the AAA Girls All Star Game that same year. In tennis\, she played on Port Angeles High School’s only state championship team in 1986\, finishing second in doubles with Nicole Ostrowski. She was also a two-time All-League soccer player. In college\, she was starting point guard at Duke where she finished as the No. 3 Duke player all time for single game assists\, No. 2 in double digit assists\, No. 2 in minutes player per game\, and No. 9 in three-point field goal percentage. Formerly COO for the Gates Foundation in Seattle\, she currently chairs the Fred Hutch Cancer Center board of directors\, is CEO of Imaginal Leadership Strategies and hosts a popular podcast called  “The Space in Between Podcast”. \nMIKE BRIGGS\, FOOTBALL (CLASS OF 1960)\nA three sports star at PAHS\, Briggs played on the outstanding 1959 football team that arguably was the best football team in PAHS history\, losing only to Everett in the opening game of the season. He is often called the best student athlete to ever come out of the school\, serving as the PAHS Salutatorian in 1960. Playing both offense and defense\, he went on to be an All Pacific Coast Conference tackle at the University of Washington in 1963. He was also an academic All-American and played for the Huskies in the 1964 Rose Bowl. After receiving a degree in Physics at the UW\, he went on to receive his MBA from Harvard\, and had an extremely successful business career\, serving as the CEO for several companies. \nSHERRI FELTON\, TRACK & BASKETBALL (CLASS OF 1977) \nFelton made the Seattle Times Golden Girl list of the top 40 female multi-sport athletes in State of Washington high school history in 1989. She was All-State in basketball\, setting state tournament records for two game (70 points and 28 field goals) and single game scoring (39 points). She high jumped 5-11 during her senior year\, which was the best in the nation. She qualified for the USA national team trials in the pentathlon\, and was all-league in volleyball\, basketball and track. She went on to become the first female to high jump over 6-0 at the University of Washington\, and set the Husky single game basketball scoring record of 36 points against WSU\, which stood until all-time NCAA scoring leader Kelsey Plum broke it. \nBARRY WILCOX\, CYCLING (CLASS OF 1996) \nA multiple national champion in the 15 to 16 year old age category in the sport of road cycling and a member of the United States Junior National Cycling Team during his sophomore and junior years at Port Angeles High School. He was also a consistent top five finisher in a number of professional races amongst men years’ older than him. Unfortunately\, he was also involved in an automobile accident during his junior year at PAHS that resulted in a spinal cord injury and quadriplegia. A few years later Barry would play wheelchair rugby with a couple different teams across the nation and two of which won national championships. He got his second chance to race bicycles again\, although a hand cycle\, in 2015. and has been on many world cup podiums around the globe. His greatest accomplishment was at the 2023 World Paracycling Championships in Scotland where he claimed a bronze medal in the road race. He is currently on the Unites States Para National Cycling Team and hoping to compete in the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.

Raising awareness\, shifting perspectives\, and empowering individuals to create change within their communities\, Reckless Son is more than just a show\, it’s a calling. \nReckless Son was developed in part by the HB Studio Artist Residency program and was workshopped in Oregon State Penitentiary\, The Theater Workshop at Otisville State Prison\, and the Chesterfield County Jail. \n \nMatt Butler is a songwriter\, poet and storyteller as well as the founder of Art That Serves\, an organization dedicated to bringing the arts to the incarcerated.  His solo show Reckless Son tells the story of how his concert at the Albany County Jail led to over 100 performances in jails and prisons across the country.  He’s been featured on NPR Morning Edition\, The Blue Grass Situation\, and PBS with SPIN saying “Butler is doing something special for the American arts” after adding him to their albums and artists of the year lists.  He’s performed at events held by The David Lynch Foundation\, The Columbia Center For Justice\, American Folk Art Museum\, National Alliance On Mental Illness (NAMI)\, The Caron Foundation and was an inaugural ‘Activist In Residence’ at the Kripalu Center in the Berkshires and Artist In Residence at HB Studio in Manhattan.  Along with correctional facilities\, he speaks and performs at universities\, high schools\, and retreat centers.  His first poetry collection is titled The Sonnets Of Becoming. \nField Arts & Events Hall\, the Field Hall Gallery\, and the upstairs Sunset Bar & Lounge will open at 5:30PM on May 3rd. Food and drink will be available for purchase in the Sunset Bar & Lounge prior to the start of the show and to pre-order for intermission. Theater doors will open at 6:30PM for the 7PM performance. She lives physically in the day\, and ethereally in the evening\, with full feeling and empathy for all of her past and future selves.  As a human\, she is simply known as Stephanie Lee Kernes-Reaume-Batson-LaRonge-Doenges.   She is a multi instrumental classically trained musician and vocalist.  One time\, she won a competition.  At another time\, she was locally known as ‘The Singing EMT’ on youtube.  These days\, she’s known as the lead singer and guitar player and flute player and harmonica player and uke player for Bread & Gravy.   She’s also known as an artist who paints mandala art paintings.  She’s also known as a sound tech\, and runs sound for the Open Mic at the Field Hall\, as well as for her own shows.  In the past\, she was in local bands such as ‘Restless’\, ‘Luck of the Draw’\, and ‘Rolling Waters.’ \nJess Doenges:  piano/God :  At 13 years old\, Jess worked in a gas station.  13 years after that\, he realized he wanted to learn to play the piano.  13 years after that\, he started playing piano professionally.  13 years after that\, he wrote this show.  In the midst of those years\, Jess completely mastered spoken word\, slam poetry\, songwriting\, poker\, and fantasy football.  Playing God has been very humbling for him\, as he always thought he was above such things. \nOwl Chrysalis Medicine:  Narrator/Time Lord :  Owl Medicine is a multi instrumentalist and best selling trauma author and educator.  His music mirrors his writing in its unabashed and powerful approach to vulnerability.  He busked his way through England\, France\, Spain\, and Scotland\, but has found his forever home here on the Olympic Peninsula.  You can find him teaching workshops and performing his unique genre that he calls ’emotive acoustic’. \nJustin Ridle:  random 1950s guy :  After years of annoying his parents with his nonstop vocals\, Justin’s mother and father had the good sense to put Justin in a choir\, and he has never looked back.  For two decades\, Justin sang in theatre:  From opera to rock reviews.. From Australia to Disney World to the National Cathedral in D.C\, he splattered the world with his beautiful and soulful voice.  These days\, he sings on his farm\, in his barn\, on the river\, with friends around campfires\, and habitually hosts gatherings with many of the most talented and unique people on this planet.  His infectious spirit and genuine interest in lifting up those around him make him a person to know fondly. \nJesse Ahmann:  cellist/random 13th century human:   As a classically trained cellist\, and having been surrounded by music all his life\, Jesse has always dreamt of being a composer. He has since learned multiple instruments and frequently uses them in his compositions\, realizing that dream\, working as a film composer\, meditative music writer\, and successful YouTube musician. He loves to convey emotion\, both in the undercurrents of his music and the melodies. He has performed as principal cellist for numerous symphonies across the Northwest\, and also performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center; additionally\, he was a featured artist on National Public Radio’s (NPR’s) “All Things Considered.” His musical credits include performances throughout Europe\, Asia\, Central\, and South America.   Locally\, he performs with musical groups such as ‘The Ahmann Brothers’ and ‘Topia Vana’.   Jesse has also started playing standup bass with Bread & Gravy\, and he’s already nearly as accomplished with it\, as he is with the cello.  He has played in exotic places\, such as Quilcene and Chimacum\, in front of tens\, if not dozens\, of people. \nIsabelle Rose:  keyboards/space person:  From a galaxy far far away in Los Angeles California. Isabelle Rose started her musical journey with keyboards in the year 1977.  She was 4 years old the first time she went to see Star wars! When she got home\, she started playing on her dad’s keyboards and baby grand piano.  Since then\, she has evolved in her playing of musical covers\, as well as her original compositions\, with inspiration from Duran Duran\, ELO\, Led Zeppelin\, and Dream Theater.  For years\, she’s been wowing local audiences with her extremely unique and highly entertaining one person show. \nJason Taylor:  bass player/random 1960s human:   Jason is a bass player and vocalist hailing from the Pacific Northwest whose eclectic musical influences are apparent through his playing\, and is constantly working to push the boundaries of his musical understanding. He is most known for his playing with the band Bread & Gravy\, and more recently for his time with Tuff Puffin. When not playing music\, Jason can usually be found foraging or growing gourmet mushrooms.  Seriously. \nJerry Gilleland:  drummer/pirate from 1800s:   Jerry Gilleland\, known to everyone as the kindest musician on the Olympic Peninsula\, is a multi instrumentalist who has been playing drums since 1976.  He taught high school percussion and private lessons for 5 years.  He has been in roughly 100 bands and has played just about every musical style that exists.  He is nicknamed ‘lint’\, because he is always ‘in the pocket’.  As a life highlight\, he allegedly went to a raging party with Jerry Garcia’s dog walker. \nVienna Baron:  Harmony/Random Human: Vienna is one of the Harmony Honey Buns and has been singing with Bread and Gravy for a little over a year. She is a classically trained vocalist and attended Berkley College of Music in Boston\, MA and Western Washington University in Bellingham\, WA as a music major. She plays several different instruments\, has her own band (Olympic Generations)\, and they have been together for over 15 years. Her musical influences are mostly classic country artists such as Glen Cambell\, The Judds\, and The Sons of the Pioneers. She also enjoys some of the tight harmonies from Motown and blue grass. While in high school and college\, she has participated in musical theater and in multiple community choruses\, singing different parts depending on the need: soprano\, alto and/or tenor. She loves listening to a wide variety of music from classical to contemporary worship and pop music.  She loves performing and collaborating with other artists from our musical community.  Her favorite color is All of Them. \nKathy Corriel:  Harmony/Random Human:   Kathy is recently retired and a late bloomer in the local music scene\, although she’s been singing harmony since before she knew what it was.  She grew up in a very musical family and would often sing along with songs from the 40s to the 70s (the ‘Wonder Years’ of music).   She has been a soprano in several worship bands from the age of 17\, and also performed with Port Angeles Community Chorus in a production of ‘Handel’s Messiah’ and other classic operatic pieces.  Currently\, she feels blessed to be part of the Bread & Gravy family and the thriving local music community.   She loves Art\, Music\, Cats\, and PBJ sandwiches with cold milk.

During his 7 ½ years as editor of the Puget Sound Business Journal\, the business weekly was a runner-up for a Pulitzer Prize. \nFor nearly 10 years George was an adjunct journalism instructor at Western Washington University.\nHe earned a bachelor’s in history from Hanover College and a master’s in journalism from the University of Oregon. \nGeorge is currently secretary of the Washington Coalition for Open Government\, a nonpartisan\, nonprofit advocate for transparency and informed citizens. He lives in Bellevue with his wife\, historical nonfiction author Mavis Amundson. \n_ \nBRIER DUDLEY\, SEATTLE TIMES \nBrier Dudley is editor of The Seattle Times Save the Free Press public service initiative. \nDudley has been with The Seattle Times since 1998 and was a member of the editorial board for five years. He spent 14 years covering Microsoft and the technology industry\, including nine years writing a tech column for the Business and Technology sections. A third-generation Seattleite\, Dudley received a B.A. in English from Whitman College and studied film production in Italy before starting a career in newspapers at The Sequim Gazette. He has won numerous regional and national journalism awards. \n_ \nERAN KENNEDY\, PENINSULA DAILY NEWS\nEran Kennedy has been a media professional for nearly 40 years. After joining Sound Publishing in 2018\, she initially served as advertising director and was later promoted to regional publisher of the Peninsula Daily News\, Sequim Gazette and Forks Forum in 2023. \nA graduate of the British Columbia Institute of Technology\, Eran began her career in Vancouver\, B.C.\, with Elty Publications/VanPress\, where she rose to Operations Supervisor\, securing home delivery for over 500\,000 weekly newspapers across Vancouver’s lower mainland. In 1999\, she was appointed general manager of Black Press Media’s North Shore Real Estate Weekly. Later\, she moved to Hawaii when the company purchased the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and MidWeek Publications. \nEran’s leadership style sparks innovation and is rooted in service and creating community. She takes pride in community service and has served on nonprofit boards\, including the Dale Turner YMCA and Horizon School Board. She is currently the immediate past president of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce board of directors and a board member of the Clallam County Economic Development Council. \nA North Olympic Peninsula resident for the past 10 years\, Eran is married to a retired Coast Guard chief petty officer and is the mother of two active teenagers. She is dedicated to keeping the community informed and engaged with local news\, ensuring that residents stay connected to the events and issues that matter to them most. \n_ \nBROWN M. MALONEY\, RADIO PACIFIC \nBrown M. Maloney is the owner/operator of Radio Pacific\, a group of three radio stations based in Port Angeles\, WA. His experience in the newspaper industry is extensive\, spanning from community newspapers to large size daily newspapers. \nIn addition to his local radio ownership\, Maloney owned and published the Sequim Gazette and Forks Forum for 23 years.  During that time his newspapers won multiple awards within the state press association. \nMaloney however\, feels most fortunate for the impact his family business (McClatchy Newspapers) has had in California and beyond. Starting with the Sacramento Bee in 1857 (established by his great great grandfather)\, the company published the Bee and other California newspapers throughout its first 120 years.  Starting in the 1980’s\, McClatchy grew on a much larger scale acquiring newspapers throughout the US including The Miami Herald\, Charlotte Observer\, Kansas City Star and The Tacoma News Tribune.  In total the company owned and operated 30 daily newspapers. \nMaloney spent 22 years as a member of the McClatchy Board of Directors (1998-2020).  In addition\, he has been a Seattle Times Board member holding this position for 14 years. \nHow did Maloney settle on the Olympic Peninsula?  He had an Aunt and Uncle living in Port Angeles who he visited as a youngster.  He fell in love with the area and decided to do his first two years of college at Peninsula College.   Maloney eventually came back at age 30 and threw himself into what he knew best and loved most – the news media. \n_ \nEMMA MAPLE\, PENINSULA DAILY NEWS\nEmma Maple has been working at Peninsula Daily News as a general assignment reporter for about eight months\, ever since graduating from Whitworth University last spring with a degree in Communications and Peace Studies. She covers Port Angeles city council\, Clallam County commissioners and a number of other topics. Long term\, she hopes to report in the field of religious journalism or on the judicial system. \n_ \nRICH RISKI\, PENINSULA COLLEGE\nRich Riski is a journalism instructor at Peninsula College with 25 of teaching. Along the way\, he taught graduate students from the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs in Baku\, Azerbaijan where\, as a Fulbright Senior Specialist\, he explored political unrest and the cultural rise of the web. He taught for two months in Nanning\, China. \nRiski documented five national presidential conventions from both sides of the aisles. The first was as a guest of CSPAN. Later he gained media credentials thanks to KONP Radio and the generous support of the PC Foundation. \nHe worked as a reporter and photographer in central Ohio and Washington at the Peninsula Daily News\, beside freelancing. He earned a bachelor’s in natural resources from Ohio State University and a master’s in journalism from the University of Memphis. \nRiski is married to Cheryl Baumann\, a salmon restoration advocate and the father of Alden\, a surveyor and musician. The exhibit explores the essence of visual subject matter through the contrasts of light and shadow\, from bright whites to deep blacks\, in a celebration of black-and-white imagery. \nThe venue will open at 5PM\, with live music from The Sarah Shea Trio kicking off the evening. Gallery Manager Georgia Ray Johnson will introduce the artists and provide the land acknowledgement. The featured artists will offer their perspectives on the show followed by an opportunity for Q&A. The gallery will then open for viewing at approximately 5:35PM\, with musicians returning to perform as guests mingle until 7PM. \n\n\n\n\nON DISPLAY APRIL 15 – JUNE 15\n\n\n\n\nWithout color\, light and composition are put sharply into focus to create a fresh perspective. \nOn display April 15 through June 15th. She works with a range of animal athletes\, from deep-diving basking sharks to high-flying bar-headed geese. Hawkes obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Exeter\, where she was the first person to track sea turtles from populations in North Carolina and the Cape Verde Islands. She has written more than 60 scientific articles\, which have been cited over 2\,300 times.

He first played with local bluegrass bands and then professionally with the Even Dozen Jug Band\, Red Allen and the Kentuckians and Earth Opera. He became a record producer and session player on recordings with Tom Paxton\, Judy Collins\, James Taylor\, Linda Ronstadt\, Dolly Parton and many others. In 1969\, Jerry Garcia invited David to play on the Grateful Dead’s classic\, American Beauty. Garcia famously dubbed him “Dawg” and their musical friendship led to the formation of the legendary bluegrass band\, Old & In The Way. \nDawg unleashed an acoustic musical revolution with his 1977 release — The David Grisman Quintet\, featuring David’s original compositions and forging a ground-breaking style rooted in high-energy bluegrass\, interlaced with elements of jazz and world music. The Quintet (and Quartet\, Sextet and Dawg Trio) showcased dawg music for four decades with its renowned members — Tony Rice\, Darol Anger\, Todd Phillips\, Mike Marshall\, Mark O’Connor\, Joe Craven\, Enrique Coria\, Matt Eakle\, Jim Kerwin\, John Carlini\, George Marsh\, Frank Vignola\, Chad Manning\, George Cole\, Sam Grisman\, Danny Barnes and others. David also maintained a formidable traditional bluegrass presence with the David Grisman Bluegrass Experience. \nIn 1990 David founded Acoustic Disc\, producing over 100 projects featuring collaborations with Jerry Garcia\, Del McCoury\, Tony Rice\, Doc Watson\, Stephane Grappelli\, John Hartford\, Mike Seeger\, Andy Statman\, Vassar Clements\, Martin Taylor\, John Sebastian\, Tommy Emmanuel and others\, as well as historically important recordings by Dave Apollon\, Jacob Do Bandolim\, Oscar Aleman\, Svend Asmussen and Bill Monroe. \nDavid Grisman is known worldwide for his melodious mandolin style\, compositional ingenuity and the inspired performances of the groups he’s led. The family matinee will feature interspersed narration and demonstrations to introduce future fans to the fundamentals of ballet and provide context around the pieces in the performance. Click here for the full 90-minute evening performance. \nABT Studio Company\, the junior company of American Ballet Theatre\, is made up of 12-18 rising stars of the ballet world between the ages of 17 and 21. ABT Studio Company prepares these outstanding young dancers\, who hail from all over the globe\, to enter American Ballet Theatre or other leading ballet companies worldwide. Nearly 80% of current dancers in American Ballet Theatre are alumni of ABT Studio Company\, including 8 Soloists and 14 Principal Dancers – among them Misty Copeland\, Isabella Boylston\, and Calvin Royal III. \nABT Studio Company dancers perform masterworks of the classical and neoclassical canons alongside contemporary works. Morris Theater\nTickets $35-$75  CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS \nFlamenco in its purest form: an evening of duets\, solos\, and company pieces by Martín Santangelo\, Soledad Barrio\, and Noche Flamenca. \nSoledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca\, the renowned company founded by Artistic Director Martín Santangelo and dancer Soledad Barrio\, return with a new version of La Ronde (Between You and Me)\, an evening-length program of duets and ensemble works. \nApollinaire Scherr\, in a review for The Financial Times\, described La Ronde “as flamenco puro—the Spanish art stripped to its flammable core.” Brian Seibert wrote in The New York Times\, “The visual design is no more elaborate than cafe chairs and a spotlight. The wonderful musicians and the dancers’ feet are barely amplified. That’s all in accord with the company aesthetic: bare bones\, nothing to hide behind\, nothing to get in the way.”  \n“La Ronde\,” a work inspired by Max Ophüls’ 1950 film\, and the dizzying carousel of romantic and sexual relationships it presents\, that Noche Flamenca has been developing for four years. True to the company’s boundary-pushing and emotionally probing style\, in “La Ronde\,” artistic director and choreographer Martin Santangelo uses a series of duets to explore love\, hate\, jealousy\, and death. The piece draws inspiration from Ingmar Bergman’s Persona\, the pianist James Booker\, the story of Cain and Abel\, Demeter & Persephone\, and other sources\, in addition to Ophüls. \nAlso part of the program is “Refugiados” (“Refugees”)\, created from poems by children in refugee camps. To develop “Refugiados”—first created 15 years ago\, and further developed for the engagement at the Connelly—Santangelo and the company took the children’s poems\, translated them to Spanish\, and set them to song and dance. \nFinally\, La Ronde includes Soledad’s Barrio’s signature\, “Soleá\,” which exemplifies the catharsis at the heart of flamenco. In it\, she displays the singular artistry Tobi Tobias attributed to her in ArtsJournal\, where she wrote\, “What woman could hold a candle to Soledad Barrio? In modern dance\, Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham. In ballet\, maybe Nora Kaye\, in her Tudor roles. Certainly no one we can go and see today has Barrio’s transformative power.”
