Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM. \n“In ‘BIRDY\,’ the Taiwanese choreographer LAI Hung-chung explores the limits of our desires and our sense of freedom.” – Jade Enaud\, Zone Critique \n“BIRDY\,” a captivating dance piece by LAI Hung-chung\, explores the interplay of freedom and limitations within Taiwan’s communities. LAI delves into the subtle influences of emotions and historical echoes on social harmony through a blend of societal dynamics and personal narratives. \nUsing a cage and dreamer metaphor\, LAI bridges personal struggles with broader societal contexts. The deconstruction of traditional Chinese opera props\, like the spear transformed into a cage-like “Rattan pole\,” symbolizes life’s constraints. \nIncorporating the “Ling Zi” pheasant feathers\, traditionally signifying warrior might\, LAI reinterprets their meaning to empower individuals to redefine their consciousness. This exploration of freedom and self-awareness is visually depicted through the imagery of the “Ling Zi\,” subtly suggesting life’s delicate balance between limitations and aspirations. \nSet to an eclectic mix of electronic and Chinese classical music\, “BIRDY” reinterprets percussion and seamlessly blends Tai-chi with contemporary dance. It portrays the journey from tradition to modernity and conveys a powerful message that in this era\, we can redefine class\, freedom\, and limitations while seeking balance and identity. \nEVENT HIGHLIGHT:Join us in The Sunset Lounge for a special Pre-Show Conversation with Hung Dance Artistic Director Lai Hung-Chung and Field Hall’s Director of Education and Artistic Engagement\, Jessie Young. \nTogether\, they’ll dive into the themes\, imagery\, and creative process behind Hung Dance’s internationally celebrated work Birdy—offering a rare glimpse into the company’s distinctive movement language and artistic vision before the evening’s performance. \nDate: Wednesday\, November 12\nTime: 6–7 PM (before the 7:30 PM performance)\nLength of Program: 1 hour\nABOUT HUNG DANCE\nHUNG DANCE is a Taiwanese contemporary dance company founded in 2017 by artistic director and choreographer LAI Hung-chung. Inspired by the word “Hung (翃)\,” the company’s name reflects its aspiration to soar. Focusing on annual productions\, international collaboration\, and tours\, HUNG DANCE also organizes the Stray Birds Dance Platform to foster choreographers’ creativity and connect them to global resources. \nThe company has earned numerous awards for its exceptional choreographic pieces “SEE YOU” and “BIRDY” in renowned competitions and festivals worldwide. LAI Hung-chung’s choreography delves into human emotions and the connection between culture and nature. By seamlessly blending elements of Chinese opera\, mythology\, and Tai Chi with contemporary concepts\, he has created a unique dance vocabulary and training system that is sure to intrigue and captivate. \nOur mission is to make art accessible to everyone. The production revisits Mexican folklore to tell new stories\, engage old archetypes\, challenge patriarchy\, uplift the role of curanderas and re-examine our imagination about “death” and the “after-life.” \nEmbrace the power of storytelling as a form of processing grief and sharing love with those in the beyond. Love\, not sadness\, allows us to celebrate and remember those that have gone and remember that “death is not the end\, it is just the beginning.” \nABOUT LAS CAFETERAS\nLas Cafeteras have taken the music scene by storm with their infectious live performances and have crossed many genres and borders along the way. Their electric sound & energy has taken them around the world playing shows from Bonnaroo to the Hollywood Bowl\, WOMAD New Zealand to Montreal Jazz\, & beyond! \nBorn and raised East of the Los Angeles River\, Las Cafeteras are remixing roots music as modern day troubadours.  They are a sonic explosion of Afro-Mexican rhythms\, electronic beats and powerful rhymes that document stories of a community seeking to ‘build a world where many world fit.’ \nFrom Afro-Mexican to Americana\, from Soul to Son Jarocho\, from Roots to Rock and Hip Hop\, Las Cafeteras take folk music to the future. \nLas Cafeteras honor the past by using electrifying traditional instrumentation like the 8 string Jarana\, 4 string Requinto\, Quijada (donkey jawbone) and Tarima (a wooden platform). Las Cafeteras sing in 5 distinct languages\, English\, Spanish\, Spanglish\, Love and Justice … and they believe everyone understands at least one of those languages. \nThey’ve performed in the good company of Mexican icons Café Tacuba\, Natalia LaFourcade\, Lila Downs\, Gypsy Kings\, Colombian superstar Juanes\, Hip Hop artist Common\, Los Angeles legends Ozomatli and Los Lobos\, performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra\, and many more. \nOur mission is to make art accessible to everyone. SUMMARY:The Things Around Us
DESCRIPTION:Field Hall Presents: The Things Around Us\nComposed\, Written\, and Performed by Ahamefule J. Oluo\nThursday\, October 16 @ 7PM | Donna M. Morris Theater\n*Tickets $25-$50 Adult\, $18 Youth | Financial assistance available – click here to apply\n*Our ticketing platform Ludus charges a 5% service fee for all credit card transactions. To avoid this fee\, visit our Box Office at 201 W. Front Street and pay via cash or check. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM. \n“As both a speaker and a musician\, Ahamefule J. Oluo specializes in mellow anxiety. It’s a smooth but layered style that makes them highly agreeable to listen to and at the same time unexpectedly moving. The concentrated emotional force lurking in their ease of manner sneaks up on you.” – The New York Times \nThe Things Around Us is a dazzling new work from acclaimed multi-disciplinary artist\, Ahamefule J. Oluo\, that layers live music and narrative exploration to create an introspective evening about the things that connect us all. It is the third in a trilogy of shows from Oluo\, following NOW I’M FINE and SUSAN. \nIn the show\, Oluo uses looping technology\, trumpet\, clarinet\, vocals\, cardboard shipping boxes for percussion\, and other instruments to create an expansive symphony performed live by one person. Weaving narrative layers throughout\, Oluo shares deeply personal reflections and darkly humorous accounts of strangers\, acquaintances\, and friends that conjoin with the music to create a singular\, transcendent experience. The Things Around Us is an evening that will draw you in and remind you of the beauty in life. \nIn The Things Around Us\, Oluo continues their practice of layering live music and narrative\, but departs from their previously epic ensemble work and highly personal stories to create\, instead\, an intimate solo show about other people. \nCombining experimental jazz\, new music\, Nigerian hi-life\, and electronic looping with bizarre and darkly humorous accounts of strangers and acquaintances\, Oluo draws out larger social and political meanings from those encounters\, weaving together a tapestry of characters and existential inquiries with dynamic multi-instrumental compositions\, using trumpet\, clarinet\, vocals\, looping/effects pedals\, and cardboard shipping boxes for percussion. \nThe Things Around Us began as a 15-minute video piece produced during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020\, supported by a Mellon Creative Research Fellowship with University of Washington’s Meany Center. It has been further developed through early-stage showings at Black-centered cultural spaces LANGSTON and Wa Na Wari in Seattle\, residencies at MacDowell\, Yaddo\, and Seattle Rep. \nThe Things Around Us was supported by a commissioning grant from The Map Fund. \nOur mission is to make art accessible to everyone. Financial assistance is available for this event through our #fieldhallforall program. Patrons can request a discount of up to 100%. Click here to apply for financial assistance.

DESCRIPTION:Field Hall Presents: Films @ Field Hall: This is Spinal Tap\nThursday\, October 9 @ 7PM | Donna M. Morris Theater\nPay-what-makes-you-happy! DONATIONS APPRECIATED\nOur rock-themed fall film series continues with the ultimate metal movie: This is Spinal Tap! We encourage you to dress up in your best 80s or hair-metal band inspired look and rock out with us for an evening that’s turned all the way up to eleven. \nThe mockumentary comedy by Rob Reiner\, Christopher Guest\, Michael McKean\, and Harry Shearer\, This Is Spinal Tap chronicles England’s loudest and most punctual band on their disaster-filled U.S. tour. \nThis Is Spinal Tap was released to critical acclaim in 1984 and went on to become a cult classic. In 2002\, it was deemed “culturally\, historically\, and aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress\, and was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry. \nThis Is Spinal Tap has been credited with launching the mockumentary genre. The film shines a light on the self-contained universe of a metal band struggling to get back on the charts\, including everything from its complicated history of ups and downs\, gold albums\, name changes and undersold concert dates\, along with the full host of requisite groupies\, promoters\, hangers-on and historians\, sessions\, release events and those special behind-the-scenes moments that keep it all real. This screening is hosted in celebration of the release of Spinal Tap II: The End Continues\, scheduled for theatrical release September 12th. \nDoors open at 5PM; food and drink available for purchase through the Sunset Bar & Lounge.

SUMMARY:Ian Maksin: Songs of The Vagabond Cello
DESCRIPTION:Field Hall Presents: Ian Maksin\nThursday\, August 21st | Doors 5PM\, Performance 7PM\nTickets: Adult $25-$26.85\, Youth $10-$11.10*\, CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS\n*Our ticketing platform Ludus charges a 5% service fee for all credit card transactions. To avoid this fee\, visit our Box Office at 201 W. Front Street and pay via cash or check. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10AM-2PM. \nBREAKING BOUNDARIES both musical and geographical\, cellist\, composer and multilingual vocalist IAN MAKSIN has created his own unique style by blending elements of different genres and traditional music from around the globe in a new way using his cello as the main unifying force. \nONE-MAN ORCHESTRA: In addition to cello\, he used an electronic device called the loop pedal\, which allows him to create “loops” or layers by recording and replaying his own playing in real time. \nSINGING IN 30 LANGUAGES: What began as a hobby and a passion for linguistics and travel has become part of a unique concert experience. At this time Ian Maksin sings in Ukrainian\, Polish\, Russian\, English\, Farsi\, Armenian\, French\, Italian\, Arabic\, Hebrew\, Mongolian\, Bambara (one of the tongues spoken in West Africa) and many other exotic languages. Most of this repertoire was amassed by Maksin during his world travels\, jam sessions and collaborations with local musicians. Many of his original songs and instrumental compositions are also infused with flavors of ethnic music from countries and regions where he drew inspiration from: Mongolia\, West Africa\, Middle East\, the Balkans\, Andalusian flamenco. \nTHE GLOBAL MUSICIAN: Ian Maksin was born in Leningrad\, former USSR\, into a multinational family and grew up absorbing many cultures and traditions from an early age. He began playing guitar and piano at age 3 and cello at age 6 at the School for Gifted Children in Leningrad and then came to the USA at 16 to continue studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. After working for many years in the classical genre including a three-year tenure with the New World Symphony in Miami Ian has decided to look for his own musical path. His diverse musical experience\, including playing rock and blues guitar and passion for jazz and world music has allowed him to take the cello to a new dimension and develop his own distinct style as a musician and composer. \nIn Ian’s own words: “At some point I realized that music is much more than mere entertainment. Music is one of most powerful and unifying forces in the world\, capable of healing\, inspiring\, bringing people together and bringing peace among them. I believe that cello will save the world”  \n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Presented by Pigs on the Wing: Echoes of Pink Floyd Tour
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Pigs on the Wing\nEchoes of Pink Floyd Tour\nSaturday\, July 26th @ 8:00PM | Donna M. Morris Theater\nTickets $25 – $50 | CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS \nFrom its garage-rock roots in 2006 as a one-off club show\, to immersive multimedia productions in top venues throughout the West Coast\, Portland Oregon-based Pink Floyd tribute Pigs on the Wing has built a loyal following dedicated to the band’s high-energy take on Pink Floyd’s music. All members of Pigs on the Wing are seasoned veterans of the Pacific NW rock scene and are unapologetic in bringing their wide-ranging musical influences to the table. Setting the band aside from other tribute-rock acts\, Pigs on the Wing balance a decidedly un-tribute-like attitude towards the music with the precision and authenticity expected by Pink Floyd fans. \nPigs on the Wing has toured relentlessly throughout the Western US and in recent years featured full album performances of Dark Side of the Moon\, Wish You Were Here\, Animals\, and The Wall. None are bier fans of the work of Pink Floyd than the members of Pigs on the Wing themselves\, and the band takes their role as stewards of the music seriously – something immediately evident in the bands’ immersive performances. \nPigs on the Wing’s 2024-2025 tour\, “Echoes of Pink Floyd”\, is a second act to the band’s previous year’s tour. As before\, the Echoes of Pink Floyd tour will feature a new selection of the very best of classic-era Pink Floyd cuts organized into 2 distinct sets. Rather than performing a single album from start to end\, expect to hear the band focus on their favorite sections of the classic albums\, including hits\, deep cuts\, and the band’s trademark willingness to explore the sonic space in experimental improvisation. \nPigs on the Wing is: Matt Sulikowski (sax); Matt Jones (keys / vocals); Bryan Fairfield (drums); Jason Baker (guitar / vocals); Dave Lindenbaum (guitar / vocals); Holly Brooks (vocals); Eric Welder (bass / vocals) \nOfficial Website | Facebook Page | YouTube Channel \n

The groups support the Army’s mission by boosting morale\, fostering community engagement\, and representing the Washington National Guard with pride. Drawing inspiration from early 20th-century jazz pioneers\, the band captures the essence of the original jazz era\, characterized by its lively rhythms\, collective improvisation\, and rich brass instrumentation. Their performances evoke the spirit of classic New Orleans jazz\, offering audiences a nostalgic journey to the roots of American music. \nBrassquatch\nBrassquatch is a dynamic brass band that infuses traditional brass band music with elements of funk\, pop\, and soul.
