Phares’ studies with many of the region’s most respected teachers\, landed him the bass chair with NW legendary pianist Overton Berry\, with whom Phares was associated for the next 40 years until Berr’s passing. Thanks to the experience\, mentoring and exposure gained by working with Berry\, Phares became one of a pool of working bassists in Seattle\, performing steadily in various groups\, with such national and regional talents as George Cables\, Bruce Forman\, Jay McShann\, Pete Christlieb\, Larry Coryell\, Frank Wess\, Dave Peck\, John Stowell\, Charlie Bird\, Mark Murphy\, Peter Sprague\, Stanley Cowell\, Roland Hannah\, Ernestine Anderson\, Woody Woodhouse\, Marc Seales\, Randy Halberstadt\, Floyd Standifer\, Jabo Ward\, Bob Nixon\, Patty Padden\, Tuxedo Junction\, and more\, at various jazz venues\, including Seattle’s Jazz Alley & Parnell’s\, as well as regional jazz festivals\, such as Centrum Port Townsend\, Bellevue Jazz\, Edmonton Jazz\, Vancouver\, Portland & Toronto. Since landing on Vashon Island in 2020\, he has served as host of “The Jam In The Atrium”\, a monthly concert series featuring visiting NW luminary jazz artists\, now in its 5th year in 2026. \nABOUT RANDY HALBERSTADT\nSeattle Jazz Hall Of Fame inductee Randy Halberstadt\, returning for his second visit at the Field Hall\, has been a major figure on the Pacific Northwest jazz scene for many years. A multi-dimensional pianist\, he is equally at home playing be-bop\, Latin\, down-home blues\, mainstream\, free and eclectic jazz. He has performed with Herb Ellis\, Terry Gibbs\, Buddy de Franco\, Matt Wilson\, Pete Christlieb\, Bobby Shew\, Joe LaBarbera\, and many others. In 1990\, Randy performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival with drummer Mel Brown. Randy has performed with the Seattle Symphony and is the pianist for the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra. While Halberstadt’s own recordings showcase his formidable pianistic skills\, they also establish him as a first-rate composer. While Randy continues to expand his talents as a pianist\, composer\, and arranger\, he has taken equal pleasure in helping younger musicians fulfill their potential. Prior to retiring as professor of jazz theory\, ear training\, and piano at the prestigious Cornish College of the Arts\, he mentored hundreds of aspiring and upcoming jazz artists for over four decades\, as well as wirting a now globally sought-after instructional textbook called Metaphors For The Musician: Perspectives from a Jazz Pianist. \nABOUT SUSAN PASCAL\nMs Pascal\, also an Earshot Jazz Hall Of Fame award winner\, is lauded for her superb 4-mallet musicality\, and masterful improvisational skills. Susan has taken her music through four tours of Singapore and concerts\, workshops\, and clinics across the United States. Her Pacific Northwest appearances include the Earshot Jazz Festival and Centrum Jazz Port Townsend\, and as a special guest artist with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra\, the Seattle Baroque Orchestra\, and Seattle’s Gypsy jazz group\, Pearl Django. Her eclectic musical interests are reflected in her own projects. Susan’s SOUL SAUCE quintet is a tribute to Latin jazz icon Cal Tjader\, and her new BRAZIL PROJECT band features the rich rhythmic and melodic traditions of Brazil. Her straight-ahead jazz quartet has been nominated twice for Best Acoustic Group by Seattle’s Earshot Jazz. Her playing is sublime\, full of heart and a great feel for the American classic standards\, as well as modern current repertoire. Regarding this upcoming performance\, Phares states: “This trio promises to be a rather emotional performance\, my history with both Susan and Randy reaches back many decades\, I hold such deep respect and admiration for both\, as artists and persons alike\, and to play with the both of them at this performance is so very meaningful for me!”

We thank you for all levels of support – including thunderous applause for our local artists! \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT BREAD & GRAVY\nBread & Gravy Duo is a popular husband and wife act (Stephanie and Jess Doenges) who perform songs across many styles and genres. They feature powerful female vocals\, eclectic piano\, rhythm guitar\, and the occasional flute and harmonica. They have hosted or cohosted many Open Mics on the peninsula\, including ‘Open Mic at the Buzz’\, ‘The Junction Open Jam’\, ‘The Rainshadow Open Mic’\, and most recently at ‘Open Mic at the Sit-N-Bull’. They often play as a bigger band\, adding steady stalwarts such as Jerry Gilleland (drums) and Jason Taylor (bass and harmonies) and have also collaborated with dozens of other local musicians\, so one never knows who will come sit in with them on a given night. Follow @breadandgravymusic for more. \nSTEPHANIE DOENGES (SOUND)\nStephanie is one of the most established and recognized musicians on the peninsula. She has been playing music since a young age\, and has been in local bands such as Restless\, Luck of the Draw\, Rolling Waters\, and the Cornstalks. For the past twelve years\, she has been the face and voice of Bread and Gravy in all of its formations. While her voice is a main draw\, and guitar is her most common instrument\, she often surprises and astounds with riveting flute and harmonica solos.\nStephanie has run sound for Open Mics for many years now\, and she’s grown very adept at dialing people in quickly\, as well as tailoring the sound to any nuance the performer displays. \nJESS DOENGES (MC)\nJess is the quintessential late bloomer\, who didn’t touch a musical instrument until age 29. Bread & Gravy is the first and only band he’s ever been in. In juxtaposition to the versatile Stephanie\, he’s a one trick pony on the piano. But his love for piano\, and his love for Stephanie shows through in his playing\, and he has truly played himself into one of the top accompanists around. As an MC\, he has tons of experience herding cats (err.. musicians) to make the Open Mic experience enjoyable and fair for all involved. His quick wit and inviting vibe tend to make the audience comfortable and relaxed\, which is what is needed to have a supportive environment for all performers.

Their annual creative retreats in Caraíva not only led to the founding of the ensemble Caraivana but also forged the profound musical partnership that is the heart of Trio Brasileiro. \nEach musician brings extensive study of their instrument and the rich traditions of choro—a genre shaped by African rhythms and European classical influences\, and\, as cultural historian Bruno Carvalho notes\, remains “one of Brazil’s most popular music styles” even after 150 years. Whether performing classic choro or their own original works\, the trio’s performances shimmer with nuance\, rhythmic interplay\, and an unmistakable sense of joy. \nPacific Northwest audiences may remember their standout appearance at Wintergrass 2020 and their beloved\, often sold‑out faculty concerts at Centrum in Port Townsend. \nTheir music radiates the magic of long‑time collaboration:\n“The percussion and strings come together to develop a deep groove… lightning‑fast collective improvisation… and an exciting rhythmic basis for the music that is thrilling to hear.”\n— Tim Niland\, Music and More
