I Am because We Are – We Are because I Am

First Fed Community Conversations are free and low-cost arts and humanities events at Field Hall. We are grateful to our community partners, donors, and members who make these accessible events possible. This is a pay-what-makes-you-happy event.

Award winning film director Kudzai Tinago teams up with grammy nominated reggae legend Pato Banton and world-renowned keyboard player Antoinette Rootsdawtah embark on an amazing journey to 10 countries across the continent of Africa to explore and document the ancient philosophy of Ubuntu. An idea that has its roots in the Bantu dialect, meaning “I Am because We Are” illustrating the interconnectedness of all Humanity.

The documentary not only highlights the diverse beauty to be found across Africa but also focuses on some of the most dynamic and visionary leaders who practice the teachings of Ubuntu in their daily work to improve the lives of the people in their local and surrounding communities.

In celebration of the 15 awards that “The Spirit of Ubuntu” Documentary and “The Baobab” Short Film have recently won at International Film Festivals, Pato & Antoinette are heading on a world tour to host Free Film Screening Events of the movies at Cinemas, Universities and other venues in over 20 countries.

Join us in the Donna M. Morris Theater for a free screening of the abbreviated 40-minute documentary “The Spirit of Ubuntu.” Following the film, husband and wife duo Pato Banton and Antoinette Rootsdawtah will offer a 20-minute community conversation and talk back, followed by a private performance of their original music.

Field Hall and the Sunset Bar & Lounge open to the public at 5PM. Screening begins at 6PM in the Donna M. Morris Theater. The Sunset Lounge will remain open and serving dinner and drinks through 9PM.
