Two-year residency will bring new artistic creation, community engagement, and a major international environmental opera project to the Olympic Peninsula.
Field Arts & Events Hall is proud to announce the appointment of Abhishek Majumdar as its Global Artist-in-Residence for a two-year residency that will position Port Angeles as a center for international artistic creation, civic dialogue, and cultural exchange.
An internationally acclaimed playwright, director, educator, and Professor of Theater at NYU Abu Dhabi, Abhishek Majumdar is widely recognized for creating ambitious works that explore social, political, and environmental themes through powerful storytelling and global collaboration. During his residency at Field Hall, he will develop multiple original projects, lead educational programs, mentor emerging artists, and collaborate with both local residents and international creative partners.
The residency represents a significant milestone in Field Hall’s evolution from a presenter of artistic work to a place where major new work is created. As outlined in Field Hall’s strategic plan, the organization is committed to supporting the development of new work, fostering artistic innovation, expanding educational opportunities, and strengthening its role as a premier cultural destination in the Pacific Northwest. The organization has identified artist residencies as a key strategy for creating meaningful cultural experiences while attracting artists, collaborators, and audiences from around the world.

Among the residency’s major initiatives is the development of Every Beast, an ambitious environmental opera being created in collaboration with internationally renowned artists and institutions, including members of the celebrated Kronos Quartet creative network and partners at NYU Abu Dhabi and other global institutions. The work explores the impact of climate change on communities, cultures, and ecosystems through music, storytelling, and interdisciplinary performance. Development workshops are planned throughout the residency, with a long-term vision toward world-premiere production.
In addition to large-scale artistic creation, the residency will bring meaningful opportunities for local participation. Programs will include playwriting workshops, public readings, artist conversations, open rehearsals, educational activities, and community dialogues designed to connect residents directly with the artistic process. Field Hall has already begun engaging local playwrights and community members through development activities connected to Majumdar’s work.
One residency project currently under development explores themes of state power, personal freedom, and human rights, utilizing public readings and community feedback as part of the creative process. Other projects will continue to emerge during the residency as Majumdar collaborates with artists and community members across the region.

Through partnerships with schools, libraries, cultural organizations, and community groups, the residency will offer residents unprecedented access to an internationally recognized artist while creating opportunities for lifelong learning, artistic participation, and global cultural dialogue.

Abhishek Majumdar is an internationally acclaimed playwright, director, educator, and Professor of Theater at NYU Abu Dhabi. He is the Artistic Director of Nalanda Arts Studio in India and has created award-winning works that have been performed internationally. His work is known for addressing complex social, political, and cultural questions through innovative theatrical forms and global collaboration.
