EVETTE ALLERDINGS | FIBER ARTIST
SILK PAINTING, COLOR THEORY & LARGE-SCALE COLLABORATIVE ART
Evette Allerdings brings a deep love of color and fabric into the classroom, blending silk painting, design, and color theory with cultural and scientific connections. Born and raised in Hawaii, she earned a degree in Fashion Design and worked as a multi–award-winning theatrical costumer, including a final honor for Phantom of the Opera at her local community college. In 2015, she began painting on silk, inspired by the vibrant kimonos her grandmother dressed her in for Girl’s Day celebrations. Her silk paintings have since earned national recognition, including First Place in the 2D division at the Silk Painter’s International Festival (2021) and People’s Choice Honorable Mention (2022). Evette’s teaching connects artistic technique with history, science, and design, offering students both creative expression and a deeper understanding of how art interacts with the world around them.
GRADE LEVELS
Pairs well with elementary (K–6) and adaptable for middle school and high school, including after-school art clubs.
ART FORMS
Fiber Arts • Silk Painting • Color Theory • Fabric Design
ARTS INTEGRATION & CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS
Evette’s programs support Washington State Learning Standards by integrating visual arts with other core subjects:
- Visual Arts Standards (VA): Students develop skills in design, color theory, pattern, and craftsmanship (VA:Cr1–Cr3).
- English Language Arts (ELA): Opportunities for descriptive writing, oral presentation, and reflective journaling about the creative process (ELA:SL, W).
- Science (NGSS): Exploration of light, refraction, and color mixing; connections to materials science through silk and dye properties (NGSS: PS4, PS1).
- Social Studies: Cultural exploration of the Silk Road and global fabric traditions (SS: G2, H3).
Pairs well with:
- Science units on light, color, and materials
- Cultural studies and world history projects
- Geometry, symmetry, and pattern design in math
- School-wide collaborative art installations
- Multidisciplinary art-and-science projects
WHY TEACHERS CHOOSE EVETTE
- Flexible: Works as single sessions or multi-day residencies
- Adaptable: Uses non-toxic liquid paints for K–6, professional-grade dyes for older students
- Cross-curricular: Integrates science, history, and design
- Engaging outcomes: Display-worthy collaborative or individual artworks
EVETTE ALLERDINGS' PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
Light & Color Exploration
Students investigate the science of color through prisms, flashlights, and kaleidoscopes, learning about refraction, reflection, and light mixing. Can be paired with silk painting for a combined art-and-science experience. Includes optional hands-on kaleidoscope-making. Minimum: 1 class period; Grades 4–12.

Silk Painting & Cultural Connections
Students learn silk painting techniques using either professional-grade dyes or liquid paints (liquid paints are non-toxic and cost-effective for K–6; dyes contain a small amount of alcohol and are recommended for older students). Lessons incorporate color theory, the history and geography of the Silk Road, and the cultural significance of silk. Younger students focus on primary and secondary colors; older students explore advanced topics such as prisms, refraction, and color blending. Projects can be individual or large collaborative banners. Minimum: 1–3 sessions; Grades K–12.

Collaborative Silk Banners
A whole-class project where students design and paint large silk panels. Students explore pattern, symmetry, and structure while creating a shared, lasting artwork for their school or community. Minimum: 2–3 sessions; Grades 4–12.
